The DOL at my city in Washington State said it wasn't required to have a license plate in the front of vehicles. My friend just got a ticket for not having one in the front. Does anyone know what the law is?

Required in WA. Tags (aka expiration sticker) on the required plate are not required.

Hint, if they give a ticket, it's probably illegal.

Trevor

Is my front plate required?

Yes, you are required to have both your front and rear license plates clearly displayed on your vehicle.

Your front plate is still required, the difference is that you are only required to display current tabs on the rear plate.

WHOA! I really messed up here and got my story wrong.

The ticket was for having it in his front window (where it WAS clearly displayed).

They should not be able to ticket him if it is displayed in his windshield.

So it was obstruction of view?

Well the officer did. After my friend explained...

"Well the DOL said it just had to be visible in the front and that it was okay to have it in the front window"

The officer replied with...

"Well what if you got in a wreck and the thing came flying back and cut your head off? That's dangerous"

My friend was unable to go to court because of prior engagements so he was forced to pay the 150 dollar ticket.

No. I mean...hood scoops and all that are legal. It wasn't big enough to be obstruction of view.

Wow, the cops check for loose objects in your car now? I'll have to remember the heavy-duty cargo tiedowns the next time I go grocery shopping.

Your friend is an idiot.

You write the court clerk a formal letter requesting a rescheduling of the hearing and an explanation of why he can't make it. They send you a letter in reply with a new date.

Unless those "prior engagements" are something stupid like "I have to go skiing that day" in which case your friend is still an idiot.

In any case, your friend should have done everything he could to get in front of a judge and tell them what the DOL told him instead of being a freaking moron and just paying the bill, taking the ticket.

The cop was being retarded. Unless the license plate was at some extremely acute angle making it very hard to read from most front angles, being "visible in the front" perfectly includes the plate sitting in the windshield.

Take 5 minutes and search the internet or call your local court house/police station/town hall.
