license compliance

I heard that software companies don't care (usually) if youre using the same serial key to install software across an organization... and what really matters in the end (if youre doing a software audit) is the reciepts/proofs of purchase of the software from vendors and the client license certificates. Is this true?

thanks

Depends on the company I would assume. Most also offer a volume licensing scheme where you only get 1 license but you're allowed to use it on X machines, that's probably the safer option to take.

For the most part no that is not true. If the serial key is sent over the internet during registration some companies will refuse any support if you have used one key on several installs. Besides that it is a clear violation of almost any major companies EULA.

but how does a company tell if its a legit reinstall? suppose you have a word processor like MS Word but your computer gets fried and you have to do a reinstall on new computer?

Depends on the registration/activation required. In some cases you do have to contact the software vendor and 'reset' the serial number, like with MS after you reinstall XP too many times.

yeah, thats one of the reasons why i havent upgraded my win2k workstation at home to xp. i upgrade the hardware on it just about every other month... and these are big upgrades like CPU, board, HD's.

maybe ill just switch to RH9 for my home use as well.
