Licence Plate Question

What does it mean when a custom licence plate has the number 1 at the end of the #s/letters? I'm pretty sure its not just something anyone can get, but not sure of the significance. for example, "xxx 1" xxx being any letters.

Anyone can get it. It probably means xxx xxx was taken.

Is the 1 smaller than the other letters?

I've seen those before, I think you can get the same plate number for all of your cars, and they just put a small number at the end too indicate which set of plates it is. The number is about half the size of the rest of the letters.

Edit: This is the only example I could find, the small numeral is in the middle in that case.

Vanity plates are actually XXXXXX. There is no predefined space.

I've seen: SMOKED, H4X0R, L33T, LOL, JUGS, ... all in Dallas.

no, i know what you mean though.

i am fairly sure that it is not something anyone can get. for examle "ATX 1"

So the number isn't small? How does it differ from any other personalized plate other than that there is a number at the end? I'm confused.

it doesnt differ, but i think that the "1" signifies something, and is not available for just anybody to get

But if the NJ DMV is anything like the NJ State Police, they'll have a form you can use to e-mail them, and a couple of weeks after the answer to your question becomes irrelevant they'll finally e-mail you back and tell you they're not allowed to answer specific questions, and instead you should consult a lawyer. 🙂

Every state has their own rules governing vanity plates, so what applies here in AK may have nothing to do with your state's rules. For instance, AK doesn't allow any personal plates in which the first 3 digits are numbers. I wanted to put "727GUY" but it wasn't allowed. Then we have other restrictions... the first two digits cannot be "XX" because that is reserved for gov't vehicles; and they can't be "YY" either because that is a vehicle used by a church that is exempt from tax. So maybe your state has something involving the "1"? Look at your DMVs homepage... maybe they ahve it there.

Michigan uses a small x for government vehicles, like 43xFEA, including city hall workers, public transportation for children and adults, police and fire, etc.
