Hi.

I think this belongs here, but not 100% certain.

As per the title, I just got a bunch of patches for both W7 and Office 2010, and, when I rebooted, a LIBRARIES folder appears on my desktop....no way to delete it; when I hit personalize, it doesn't even show up to delete.

I found this fix:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/938-libraries-desktop-icon-add-remove.html

Got it, merged it, rebooted....nuthing changed.

This is way annoying. Should I run chkdisk? I do not like uninstalling hotfixes, but, it seems, one of today's did this.

Thank you.

On that thread you linked, did you try the suggestions in posts #18 and #20?

Rats!

I did this:

To get rid of the icon, you must edit the registry:

  1. Click "Start" and in the search bar type "regedit".
  2. Browse to the following folder: "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMe nu]"
  3. Once there, click "Edit" then "New" then "DWORD (32-bit) Value".
  4. A new value will be created and copy and paste this as it's name: "{031E4825-7B94-4DC3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}"
  5. Double click on the value you just created and in the value data box, enter in "1".
  6. Close out of the Registry Editor.
  7. Right click on the desktop and click "Refresh" and the icon should disappear.
Nothing changed, folder is still on the desktop and refuses to budge.

If I am running W7 64-bit, should I try this using that key, DWORD (64-bit) as opposed to wut I just tried with DWORD (32-bit)?????

Nothing like this ever happened before. I never uninstall hotfixes once I get them....U think I should now?

Edit: K.....read more posts in that thread using my own link; found this:

It works for me, thanks !

Just delete these two regedit entry in :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wind ows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\

{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}
{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44

I will now try THAT.:|

That worked good - always hated that Libaries folder mess
Searches quicker too now since it doesn't seem to look there first anymore

 U mean the folder suddenly appearing on the desktop is a known or common phenomenon? I had no clue. Never saw this before!

Given that forum I found, clearly it does happen to others, just wasn't sure how common it is.....or still, how getting today's hotfixes brought it.

But sooooooooo happy just deleting those two reg keys put things right!:D

Easy Peazy. Well, once U get slowed down by a calm and focused fellow member, read more posts and get the right fix.():)

Well it wasn't a new problem for me - just glad to finally get rid of it.
Somehow it had been auto adding just about every new file created to the Library - mostly temp game files - I probably set something wrong on it a while back.

That has been going on for many months. There is a similar fix for the desktop homegroup icon. I keep a printout of that procedure in a drawer by my Win 7/Win8.1 machine. Microsoft seems to think we MUST use Libraries. I don't use them at all.

To get rid of Homegroups, use the same reg entry and delete:

{B4FB3F98-CIA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93} Close, and enter desktop, click F5 and it goes away.

Libraries is at: {031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-Ep46B44C*DD5}

After this procedure, both Libraries and Homegroup retain their full functionaliy, It just gets rid of the desktop icons.

Actually, after several repeat occurrences over the months, I simply look for the B4FB and/or 031E codes. Works every time.

Every now and then, a Windows update will replace one or both. Another annoyer is the Desktop.ini icon. It is a simple, normal delete.

I am positive I could not have dealt with that without taking a hot icepick to my screen. That is the famous destroy the pixels fix.:sneaky: Also called the Throw the Baby Out with the bathwater Fix.

Mine was brought by one of the hotfixes we got yesterday. Which one? I do not know, and now.....I do not care.:D

Well this was a singular and new phenomenon for me. And, as per above, deleting those two reg keys (third thing I tried) put everything right.
