"I really didn't expect to be thinking about purchasing a gun. It was something that my father did and I rolled my eyes at him."

Clara, a 28-year-old nursing student, grew up in the Mid-West, where "the folks that had guns were seen as hicks" or were just "culturally different", she says.

Lara Smith, national spokesperson for the Liberal Gun Club, says her organisation has seen a "huge" rise in enquiries since November's election and a 10% increase in paid members.

This is really great news. I think that gun culture could be something that we can use as a unifying force in this country. There is so much that we disagree about, between anarchists, constitutionalists, conservatives, and liberals, but maybe guns are the key to it all, to bring about some cohesion in this country.

I think Washington, Jefferson, and the rest of the framers would be smiling right now. Maybe liberals and conservatives can start competing for better 3-shot groups and strike a friendship instead of screaming at eachother over the internet or in coffee bars.

If this trend continues, GOP is going to be for gun control in no time.

Yeah, it's wonderful that minorities and LGBTs now feel that their safety is threatened by a bunch of emboldened white supremacists.

And in that insecurity, we can find unity.

I agree with you, we put the 2nd amendment in the Constitution out of a fundamental insecurity in established / entrenched government. It is both what created our nation and held our nation together. I think that it can again do that.

By that logic, liberals should be clamoring for minorities to own guns, and look to increase carrying laws. Then when republicans waver on gun laws, enact some really tough measures on gun control. Either outcome is good because
A. liberals trust minorities with guns, I do too.
or
B. gun control would be good in the eyes of liberals - something I disagree with, but oh well.

A nation united in fear. Sounds wonderful.

That is correct.

Initially yes, but as they come across each other in gun clubs, gun stores, etc, maybe that common ground is somewhere to start healing.
Well. Unless it's one of the gun clubs that bans "certain people". Can't really find common ground when you aren't welcome.

"Well, unless" okay sure, but public ranges and public gun stores cant. So I mean you are talking about a certain something which may or may not exist depending on where you are, so it's not really adding anything of value to the discussion. Gun ownership is something to be promoted, and I'm glad liberals are practicing their 2A right and support it wholeheartedly.

You do know that the surge in LGBT gun ownership started after the Orlando massacre. I guarantee you there are no anti gun liberals running out buying guns to protect themselves from the evil white supremacists. Unless of course you think that every white guy with a gun who didn't support HRC is a white supremacist.

Do these liberals not realize that firing even just aa few rounds from an AR15 causes PTSD?

Not yet, have small kids, don't want to risk them getting a hold of it.

Yea, you don't just buy a gun, you buy a safe, cleaning kit, all sorts of other goodies to go along with it. Don't let kids discourage you though, I guarantee you can be responsible enough to always keep it in the safe and not leave it unattended, give yourself some credit. You're responsible enough to think you're capable of raising a kid right?

I think he is mistaking PTSD for the euphoric feelings of liberty. The biggest feelings of Americanism i get are when I hear the national anthem being sung, and firing a firearm.

BBCNews seems to have pushed out one of those "Crazy Americans" articles. Americans with out current partisan BS isn't the target audience for this piece.

Here is key piece of info from the article
As a transgender woman, she does not fear for her personal safety in the Californian city where she now lives but she says she knows people in rural areas "who woke up and found a bunch of swastikas and words like 'lovely human' and 'trannie' scrawled all over their building".

This isn't a "liberal issue". This is a basic personal safety concern.

The club, which has nine chapters and members in all 50 states, aims to provide a forum for people whose political beliefs do not fit the traditional right-wing gun enthusiast stereotype.
...
Gwendolyn Patton, of the Pink Pistols, a club for for gay, lesbian and transgender gun owners, says new members fear being "harassed by the gun nuts at the range".

But she says they are mostly "welcomed with open arms by the shooting community".

"There are people who have professed to carrying a gun now because Trump made them feel unsafe," she says.

"I think their fears are groundless but I can't make them not be afraid, so whatever they need to do to feel safer, I don't have a problem with that as long as they do it responsibly."

I've always looked at Gun culture as regional. Not political.

That's what I was referring to. Thanks.

Haha, that article was hilarious. Someone pointed out on Twitter that "Gersh Kuntzman" sounds like an anti-Semitic parody account.
