Liberals, have you ever been called a Conservative?

I'm deeeeeply tempted to rant since today my new Uber-leftwing ethics professor basically called me a naive conservative and my Uber-leftwing significant other called me a heartless money-grubbing republican..... BUT instead I'll ask a question to everyone here. Have you ever been mislabeled by someone close to you or someone further left/right than you? (Oh and don't give the old "I'm a Libertarian, I don't apply" line)

I get called a conservative all the time, even though I am most certainly not. My NDP (leftist canadian party) friend can't get over the fact that I have a subscription to the Economist.

The Economist is a great magazine, no matter your political orientation!

I've been accused of being both a conservative and a liberal. I try not to take offence and gently correct them.

Yeah, my significant other and my new professor are deep in what we call the Tin Foil Hat zone.

Boy, if the conservatives here think Conjur is bad, you'd be surprised at the stuff I hear

heh...same here. I can't begin to count the times I've been called a "liberal" or a "neo-con" simply because I don't buy into the partisan BS and rhetoric like some people do. As amazing as it seems, I can actually form my own opinion without relying on some political party telling me how to think :p

Perfectly understandable. Yesterdays liberal is todays conservative. I must conclude you're just a little slow compared to your love and your professor.:)

Been called both, its actually kind of funny once you get over the shock. You should tell your ethics professor to teach ethics and not his political ideology. Last year I got in one of my kids teachers faces for the same issue.

He's a money grabbing republican. He knows its cheaper to keep "production" inhouse, rather than outsource to the nearest bordello.

You have no idea what you're talking about. A wife costs a lifetime of whores especially if you get a divorce.

Indeed. Its downright puntacular ;)

But try telling that to NDPers and the only reply you'll get is clichés like "they're they mouthpeace for evil multnational/they are radical right wingers/pretentions assholes, they're evil capitalists..." It never ends.

Probably not. I'm not suprised by much in politics anymore. Conjur really isn't THAT bad - he's just pissed and disillusioned and has "switched" because of spite. I'm sure if he and I were talking face to face about the issues and things he wouldn't be that far off from what I am(unless ofcourse he got defensive;))
Anyway - yes, IRL i've been called a tree-hugger:Q Mainly because I pop wood(figuratively) over renewable energy sources and the like. I had an electrician call me and others who think wind and bio-power are viable sources of energy - hippie tree-huggers:p The next time I saw him I handed him a stack of research - he's since changed his tune:p

So yes- it's hard to understand someone's leanings from just one or two issues and sometimes people get mis-"lableled":Q

Kinda like how when you're at the North Pole, any direction you go is south?

And yes, I'm a Libertarian, and I have been called both conservative and liberal at varying points. Which is entirely appropriate, since Libertarians sorta straddle the conservative/liberal divide depending on which issue you're talking about.

Actually, I think Libertarians frustrate true believers in either liberal or conservative camps, because we aren't just their exact opposite evil twin like the other side is. We agree with both POVs on certain things enough to give them some hope we're "on their side," then turn around and disagree with them on just as many things.

This sort of thing happens all the time. Some people are so extreme, or so sheltered, that they mistake mainstream views as radical or biased, [edit, I should importantly add] and also vice versa. Also it seems that some people get their views from a party talking points memo or something, i.e. toe the line on every issue. To a degree this can be expected in rational people of certain ideologies, but there are notable cases to the contrary.

I've been called liberal and conservative by many people, appropriately people who tend to vote strictly along party lines. I'd like to think I'm intelligent and enough well-read to rely on my own opinions and not on a party handbook.

Cheers!

This semester I'm stuck with a computer science professor whose natural voice sounds liek Steven Hawking, an 'ethics' professor with views so far to the left that I can't help but challenge him on every other issue, and a business law professor who dresses up as the people he talks about. This semester I'm stuck with a ton of nuts

You? Thats hilarious... :)

Me... I say I'm morally and religiously conservative but politically liberal... Though only the latter seems to show up here so they all tend to say I'm a lib...

It's amazing how many times I've been labeled a "liberal". I'm sure I was equally denounced as a war-mongering conservative a year ago in my support, then, of the war.
