The rock band Nine Inch Nails said Friday it canceled plans to appear on next week?s MTV Movie Awards after the network questioned the band?s plans to perform in front of an image of President Bush.

THey wanted to play in front of the image of the President but those left wingers in the media  wouldn't allow it. The country is so polarized the mere image of George Bush causes problems.
Note: I don't like 9 inch nails, do not like their music- but they should be able to perform the song in front of the image of the President.

WAIT WAIT WAIT... you're blaming the LIBERAL media, because they didn't want an ANTI-BUSH performance?

Wow this is almost as bad as Crimson's post in that knife thread. You guys have out-done yourselves today, bravo.

I would say that it's absolutely the network's perogative to decide what content to show. This isn't censorship, nor is it liberal/conservative bias. It's as simple as a corporation that makes money off of all sides of the political spectrum not wanting to offend part of its viewership and therefore affect profit.

they should be able to perform the song in front of the image of the President.

Sure - if they get their own TV network. The First Amendment can't force private companies to show content they think will cut into their business.

?While we respect Nine Inch Nails? point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement. When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards.?

To me it appears MTV did not a partisan statement made on their show, and they have every right to keep it politically neutral. There are many other platforms to make political statements.

The band exercised their free will and withdrew.

No suppression of 1st amendment here.

I concur.

The ever-diminishing number of corporations that own the major media outlets, however, is disturbing. Namely, if all of the big three media corps disagree with you, there are fewer and fewer outlets to get your message sent through.

Nine Inch Nails has company...

Bush-As-Groucho Posters Spark Uproar

LOS ANGELES -- Posters that depicted President Bush with a Groucho Marx-style mustache and cigar were ordered torn down at a high school after a student complained.

Theater students, who had created the posters to advertise a satirical play, countered with new posters with a First Amendment message.

Principal Kenny Lee ordered 100 posters removed from the campus of El Camino Real High School in the Woodland Hills area last week on grounds that they promoted smoking and "endorsing one ideology over another."

"That's our take on the student speech and conduct," Lee said.

The school-funded posters advertised the students' play, "The Complete History of America (Abridged)," which satirizes U.S. history.

A senior who supports the president wrote a complaint letter to the administration, teachers and students said.

"We had one student who was very upset," Lee said. "If something is bothering a student on campus, we're going to address it."

The poster ban infuriated some students.

"It taught us that the First Amendment certainly does not guarantee the right of free speech," said Jes Shah, 16, a junior in the school drama program.

The principal asked the drama students to come up with new posters. The new designs all feature a silhouette of Bush and a burning cigar, along with inscriptions such as "Free Expression for All (unless you are in high school)" and "What First Amendment?"

"They're good," Lee said. "I like the follow-ups."

Does anyone see a problem with these examples?

Don't underestimate the power of blogs which are free wheeling but make an impact. In some sense blogs have opened up many avenues to get your word out.

No dumbass, I'm being sarcastic. Republicans like to claim that the U.S. is controlled by the left-wing media. I beg to differ. The media is working for the government if anything.

I loved this LMAO

?We were set to perform ?The Hand That Feeds? with an unmolested, straightforward image of George W. Bush as the backdrop. Apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me,? Nine Inch Nails? leader Trent Reznor said in a statement posted on the band?s Web site.

Search Google News for "Janet Jackson"
Note that it was Viacom that got the bad press [from the fundies] over the Superbowl.
Viacom owns MTV.

It's kneejerk and fear-born, but nothing to do with the first ammendment.

MTV blows. I hope not too many kids think it's counter-culture or anything...

When I was a boy it was considered to be cutting edge; it was the future! Now it's just another "reality" TV network depicting a peculiar version of reality; a sanitized product for all to enjoy.

What if partway through their song they ripped the poster revealing one of Dubyas nipples? Huh?!
