Yes. I considered that, but I don't think they're that clever.
I *suspect* this was one kid's overzealous effort to try to get more attention on what he believes to be true - with dishonest means that undercut his own side.
Both sides have petty wrongs like this - some not that petty, like the local Republicans who have done all kinds of sabotage from phone jamming to posting wrong dates for elections in black areas or announcing all voters will be examined by law enforcement - which seem usually to be local in nature (not always, unfortunately, and the main organizations have their own bad plans, such as Ken Blackwell or Karl Rove know).
Now, the wronged side can be tempted to exploit the local wrongs for demonizing the other side, attributing it to the whole party.
That's a basic practice in bias I've long discussed: every wrong by your side is 'bad apples', and every wrong by the other side represents their whole side.
However, this does still have some odor about it, in terms of the convenience of the 'interrogator' just happening to overhear just the right conversation (or hear about it), to have this guy 'act guilty' and incriminate himself, and then 'get caught' the way he did - it could indeed have been staged, but I just suspect it's more likely it was one guy who made a mistake. The bigger problem is how much that's attributed to 'the whole party'.
