I have pretty much decided to buy a Lian-Li V1100 as it is my first own build I wanted to check to see if there is any possible problems I will have with it.

Thing I plan to put in:
Socket 939 mobo, w/ AMD64 cpu
Geforce 6800 Ultra
Optical drive
FDD
2 IDE HDD in RAID 1
Air cooling on CPU (perhaps water at a later date)

First possible problem:
In the AnandTech review of the V1000 they could not fit in an oversized PSU since this is a simular to the V1100 inside, I am thinking this will be the same. However, I am assuming I will not need an oversized PSU as I am guessing I can still get a high powered standard size one.

Second:
Quite a few PSUs seem to have fans on the bottom and because of the positioning of the PSU in the case I am worried this fan would be blocked and I will not be able to use one like this.

Third:
There seems like a big distance from motherboard to HDD bays to 5.25" bays and as I am using IDE drives am I going to have problems getting and IDE cable to reach. NB I am not sure what is the best config for RAID 1, whether the 2 drives go as Master and Slave on the same channel or on seperate channels as both Master/Slave. If they both go on the same channel then the cable stretch shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Fourth:
When my dad built his PC a while ago, in order to connect the front USB slots on the case, he had to run a cable out of USB slot on the PCI card in the back and then in through an open PCI slot cover to the front of the case. I am guessing this would not be neccessary as the USB ports will connect direct to the mother board. Would this be at the lose of USB slot in the back?

These are my main concerns let me know if you can think of any others I should have :)

I would dispense with the ide raid and go to SATA. It won't cost much more and the speed increase should be noticeable. Also, I wouldn't worry about the psu with the fan on the bottom, it will still draw air unless you mount something (no clue what) directly beneath it.

I intend to with IDE because I will be using an existing HDD and getting another to go with it.

I have been covering this decsion in another thread.

Argh! You new members with your nice systems. Anybody else getting sick of seeing people with socket 939 systems with 6800 Ultras? Just kidding man, I'm just jealous.

4th question: no, motherboards have a dedicated place for you to plug in the front inputs (usb slots and so on)

3rd question: there is a big distance, so you might want to order some long cables. I understand you have an existing hard drive with IDE, but this would be an area where SATA shows its superiority. The cables for it are longer and less obtrusive than IDE.

2nd: I don't see any reason why your cpu fan will be blocked. Lian-Li would get a ton of backlash if this was a problem, I'm sure.

1st:for the 1st and 2nd questions did you change psu to cpu? That seems like what you did. You should be able to fit a nice power supply in there no problem (any ideas on what one you're getting?). Also, all you have to do to make it so that the fan on the bottom of the power supply isn't blocked (there might be holes in the bottom of the case anyways already) is to flip it upside down.

Yep I did write CPU instead of PSU in 1st and 2nd, post now edited.

Not decided on PSU yet plan is to decide the rest then get something that will power it all.

Tempted by SATA but going to stick with IDE for now because I spent to much on current drive and I don't want it to be useless. Might get 2 SATA later when low on space and have a RAID 0 + 1 config with the IDE

As far as the PSU issue is concerned, I believe there is a plate in this case with vent holes underneath it so the PSU can draw in air from underneath the case. Apparently this metal plate is there to reduce noise. From overclockcafe:

On to the lower half of the case. The power supply as we have already noted installs in the lower rear of the PC-V1100. There is a small silver square plate on the floor of the case. This plate is on risers that cover the vent holes you saw here. These floor vents were not covered in the PC-V1000 model but are in the V1100 as another small step toward silence. These covers will block the direct sound waves from being heard. Of course there will still be some noise coming out but it will be considerably less in this configuration. The power supply mounts via thumb screws to a removable plate on the rear so that it slides in and out of that part of the case.

I think the option that makes the most sense is go get a PSU without a bottom intake fan. Tagan makes one of the best 480 watt units available, give it a look.

you can use more than 1 HD you know...
you can buy a SATA and still use your 1 IDE drive you have left over..
i have a total of 4 IDE drives and 4 SATA drives now..
=)
lots of storage is your friend

I am keen to run a RAID 1 setup, more paranioer than a real need, so I would need 2 SATA drives the plan is to start off with 2 IDE and later get 2 SATA in a RAID 1 & 0 config
