I just got an older lappy, and it supports both Li-ion and NI-MH batteries. What is the difference, and which is better? The laptop came with a Li-ion but the battery was DOA and can't hold a charge.

Any info is helpful, thanks!

Li-Ion is light, likes to be topped off.

NiMH is comparitivley heavier, likes to be charged full then used until dead, then charged again.

other than what FishTankX said, I found that Ni-Mh is priced considerably lower than Li-ion .. and with the right charger, they charge a bit quicker too .. they both should last about 1000 charges (that's around 3 years for normal laptop usage ...).

it's all up to you :)

Allegedly, the Li-Ion has a higher capacity that is designed to be charged without the "memory effect". If you like to keep your lappy topped off all the time, Li-Ion is the way to go. However, they are just that more expensive. NiMH is a good deal, and they're decent batteries. If you can afford the Li-ion, go for it.

Ummm, don't Li-Ion have different Charging Charateristics over Mi-Mi batterys, I would make sure the chargers can charge both of types of batteries..

Both NiMH and Lion batteries can be topped off

Nimh does not have a memory problem and can be charged even if not fully discharged.
The memory problem was mostly a NiCad battery problem.

Please correct me if I am mistaken, I am not really a batteryphile :)

You are correct. Ni-Mh needs to be fully charged then discharged about 3 times to "set" the batterys memory, after that it is fine to charge and discharge as needed. Li-Ion just do as you like.... theyll take anything. I'd always take Li-Ion due to the fact it's lighter, and stores more energy also.
