Li-Ion battery

I've heard different things:
One is thats it's bad for Li-Ion batteries to be completely discharged and it was being compared to a piece of metal beeing bent to much and in the end breaking.
The other is that in order to have longer battery life with your Li-Ion you should discharge it completely once in a while.
Which of these methods are correct? I want to get the most out of my Li-Ion battery in my Portable video player.

Grtz

i alway sunderstood you should "refresh" your li-ions, meaning completely discharge and recharge from scratch. waiting for a certified answer 🙂

My laptop wouldn't hold a charge for more than 5 min., so I went to Compaq's troubleshooting guide, and it said to completely drain the battery, by going into the BIOS and leaving the laptop on until it turned off.

Sooo.... if the troubleshooting guide tells you to completely drain it, it must ok.

How did it perform after that?

theres no point. lithium ions don't have memory. they do have x amount of charges and a shelf life of only a few years though. if its only holding 5 minutes, the battery is simply shot. lithium ions are nice, most energy compact, but most expensive and shortest shelf life... can't have everything.
