lHmm... It was definitely worth it to upgrade my laptop!

I currently have an IBM ThinkPad A22m that has worked great for over three years now. However, lately I've noticed its age more and more, and I'm wondering how I could upgrade it to give it another couple years, or failing that, how I can start saving up for a decent new one.

I'm thinking about upgrading the hard drive to a 40GB 7200RPM notebook HDD and replacing the 64MB stick SODIMM with a 512MB SODIMM. Would this be worth the $300 splurge or should I just start saving my money for a new lappy?

Well, sadly it appears that the PC133 stick is not compatible with my PC133 system. I should've done the research beforehand. On the plus side, I now have a brand new, $38 256MB SODIMM of PC133 SDRAM. Lovely. Anyone want it?

I am still interested in buying PC100, and I'll probably just buy 128MB so that I'm only spending $20 as opposed to $100.

Update: Finally got my student copy of Windows XP Pro last night, installed my new hard drive and Windows XP; man, it's awesome! So much faster, and that's not even with any extra RAM. I'm interested to see how it will turn out once I have 256 vs. the 192MB I have now.

IMO it is still a decent laptop.

Are there any problems with it yet? What kind of battery life does it give you?

If I were you, I would just upgrade the RAM and use it...

But yeah... the HDD upgrade will really add speed to it.

See, that's the thing, I think it's a combination of the RAM and the HDD.

I would just upgrade the RAM and see how I liked that.

That by itself may be such a huge upgrade from 64MB that it would seem like a new lappy.

What OS is it running?

EDIT:

Waiting for Nik to run in screaming WRONG FORUM FVCKHEAD in just a few seconds.

Ahhh, crap, I forgot to mention! It actually has 192MB, has one 64MB stick and one 128MB stick.

Windows 2000.

Mmm, that's another thing I've been trying to figure out, which one I'd want to upgrade sooner. I'll probably splurge and buy both in the next month or so.

hdd first, ram later. You'll notice a big speed improvement going from 4200 to 7200RPM. The memory is fine, unless you really need it. If you're just surfing the net or doing something in Word, then 192MB is sufficient. I would upgrade at least to 256, although I would personally take the 64MB sodimm out and replace it with a 256 instead of a 128.

Definitely worthwhile, 512 MB + a 7200 RPM HD will make a huge difference.

I love the 7200 RPM drive in my Inspiron.

ouch, i paid $30 shipped for two sticks of 256meg sodimms...

Where from?

FS/FT forums. i probably lucked out and got an amazing deal, but i am sure you could get away with paying around $60 (or less if you find the right seller)

Mmm... I am thinking now about just getting a 256MB stick for $48. That would give me 384MB, which should be more than enough for anything I'd be doing on my laptop. I'll look around in FS/FT.
