LGs against Liteons/Plextors??

Hi all,

My cd-rom went kaput just recently and so I planned on getting a new
cdr/rw. It seems as though everybody is recommending to get lite on
cdr/rw and flashing it with a plextor?? The problem I have with lite-on's
is that I've purchased 2 of their cd roms and they have died within about
a year or a year and a half, I'm not too sure about their reliability. How
does the LG brand compare to these liteons?

Could someone explain a bit to me about the process of upgrading a lite-on
cdr/rw drive with the plextor firmware, the advantages etc?

Thanks for any help..

you dont upgrade it with plextor firmware, but rather get a 40 lite-on burner and flash the firmware with lite-ons own 48x firmware, and my dvd-rom drive hasnt quite on me yet(knock on wood) but it is only like 3 months old

AHhh, I see. Does that upgrade decrease quality of the burns or anything?
How does the quality of the burns on the liteons compare to the LG or the
plextor? I know there are some things different burners can/cannot do,
but I'm not sure what.. (??)

I don't know about their newer drives but a while back I had two LG 8x CD-ROMs. Both broke after less than a year. Since then I have stayed away from them. I have had good luck with Lite-On CD-RWs (NOT their DVD-ROMs), and newer Plextor drives.

LG's might be rebadged lite-ons i a not sure but nowadays everything sems to be rebadges lite-ons!

My friend just got a lite-on 40x and flashed it to 48, it supports mt. ranier which is a plus,
But however, if you have a little moeny to burn, as in ~130 Get the Yamaha CRW-F1! sweet burner i just got it
44x24x44

w/ Disct@2 which burns images onto the bottom of a cd where there is remaining space
mt. rainier, which allows you to drag and drop files onto a Cd-rw and it burns instantly, like a floppy, and a cool blue LED

newegg has them for 143 w// 20$ rebate and free shipping

check them out, they get sweet reviews

I hv 2 LGs, a 8x and a 32x. Both drives r great! Never failed on me, neither died!
Cant remember when I boutght the 8x, but its more than 1 yr ago.
Works great for me, n very cheap too.
Dont know about the lite on though.
Also the 32x LGs can be flashed to 40x.

When I bought my computer last year I was going to order a Lite on but hte saleman convinced me to get an LG because he said they had less problems with them. So far I've burned over 200+ CD's with no problems 😀

Cheers,

Heh, Thanks everyone.

I didnt expect to get such quick replies! I guess it really just depends on the person, everybody seems to have different experiences with each brand of cd-rw... I'm wary of lite-on/LG just because they have at times gone bad... but on the flip side the yamaha or plextor drives are soo expensive :/

Thanks for all the replies.. I'll choose a cd drive some how......

LGs aren't rebadged Lite-Ons. They make their own drives.

I suggest you get a Lite-On. They both inexpensive and reliable. I have several Lite-On drives and all are doing great.

Hi,,

everyone says to get a lite-on cd-rw, so I did.

I also bought the Lite-on DVD-rom, but some people here say it`s not a good choice, why? Whats`s up with it?

No, LG makes their own drives. In fact LG has around 20% of the market share of optical drives to themselves. They are huge suppliers to the OEM market. Personally I have a LG 24x burner, and I have to say that I'm extremely pleased with it. It's among the fastest 24x writers, got good DAE speeds and probably the best part is that these drives are extremely quiet. This complements my Barracuda IV very well for a quiet PC. I haven't got even 1 coaster till date with my LG unit. And I've burned around 150 discs for myself & friends.

Knock on wood, but my Liteon 16 DVD has read around 1.5 terabytes of info or more and hasn't had any problems. Just got a new 40x cdrw and flashed to 48x, it burns at 48x just fine, hope it stays as reliable as the dvd.
