LGA775 Pentium-D Rig...Component Help!

Hey there everyone...I'm looking at the prospect of building a new socket 775 system for general multi-tasking and Nuendo with loads of vst instruments loaded...id like to be able to rip dvds or encode/decode in the background and still use nuendo smoothly. also...id like to have a blatant disregard for system resources when opening windows and programs...also...perhaps a HDTV tuner card...with other programs running...

I'm NOT gaming...not even a little bit...it is of NO concern

-either a pentium D 805 ($155CAD) OR pentium D 930 ($255CAD)
-if an 805, what HS/F for 800fsb action? muahaha

-what motherboard would you suggest? (i like the idea of being able to play cd's with the computer powered off...with those asus boards...is that available in 775?) (ASUS site is down for maintenance...so i dont know)

-could i use generic major brand ram and oc on a divider, or would it be in my best interest to get performance ram?

-id rather use a 7200 rpm drive...raptors still seem a little expensive for my liking...ill probably end up running a maxtor dmax 10 or something to that effect...unless you can make a good recommendation otherwise

money is definitely an issue...i want the best value i can get...and im open to any suggestions. thanks for the help!
 
I would go with the 930 and the Asus P5WD2 premium. The 805 is gonna need water cooling, and a very hefty power supply to hit 4ghz, mine hits 57c on water cooling at 3.7ghz, and my 450w Antec isn't enough to get it higher. With good air cooling(scythe ninja gets my recomendation) and the P5WD2 premium, the 930 should more easily hit 4ghz. Netburst chips are bandwidth hungry, so I would at least get DDR-2 667 and use a divider to keep it from running higher than it can handle.

Nope, multies can't be lowered. Oh, and no reason to get performance ram with super tight timings, bandwitdh generaly helps more than timings with netburst.

BTW...the board Stevty recommended is X-fire...i don't play games so its useless to me...please read my first post before you answer.
 
930 + ASUS P5WD2 Premium + 2GB Corsair Value Select DDR2 533 kit + Theatre 550 PRO + Seagate 7200.10 series drive of the size of your liking + Gigabyte passive 7300GS for h.264 decoding should give quite a nice system.
 
i can get OCZ value series pc4200 4-4-4 timings for almost $40 less than the kingston and corsair value series ddr2 is unavailable...and the P5WD2 is a waste of time...i dont need x-fire...i think id be better off spending that $100 on more ram or on the 930...does that make sense to you?

If you want to overclock a 930, you're getting that board. It's a crossfire capable board, but that doesn't mean it's strictly for gaming. I use my "crossfire" capable 975 board to run two different video cards for a 3 monitor setup. I do no gaming on it, mainly testing virtual servers and running multiple apps. The Asus P5WD2 Premium is the only board out right now that's capable of going over 250 fsb on the 9xx series chips. Atleast it's the only one I've seen doing it.
