so any recommendations on a heatsink that is better than the stock heatsink (cooling wise of course) that does not need a backplate put on the motherboard to mount the heatsink (so thus the motherboard does not need to be removed for installation) ?

if you have other suggestions, thats fine

thanks

edit: perhaps i should've posted this in another anandtech forum, but screw it

A Q6600 is hot as hell and cooling it with a cooler with a backplate is nearly a must. He could do an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro without a backplate, but he couldn't overclock at all and might still throttle.

In the end, my best answer would be to tell him to get off his lazy ass and do it the right way with a decent cooler.

Tell him to remove the motherboard. It shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 hours start to finish for installation. Any 775 cooler worth buying is going to require a backplate.

the best you can get without a backplate is the Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX.

but like everyone else said, do it once and do it right.

775 has a backplate And the 9700 would only be good for stock anyways.

My Scythe Ninja B doesn't use a backplate and it does quite well compared to the stock cooler of my e6600 even with the chip overclocked to 3 GHz... enough that I run without a CPU fan.

I think the arctic cooling Freezer 7 pro would be a good choice for not a lot of money.
