LGA1366 CPU upgrade - worth it?

Gentlemen,
Please bear with me because I've been out of the game for many, many years.

One of my systems is an ASUS P6T Deluxe + Core i7-965 Extreme combo.

Are there any CPU upgrades worth considering?

By worth considering I mean this: Are there good deals on LGA1366 processors (Core i7 or Nehalem Xeon) that are reasonably priced and will be worth upgrading to?

I am looking for the type of info like (if there's such a beast): This particular [Xeon/Core i7] is well priced, low consumption, faster than your current processor and responds well to overclocking. The kind of information I can't find by reading the list of processors this mobo supports, or the wiki table of LGA1366 processors.

I would like to extend the life of this system as long as possible, so if any of you guys have followed the evolution and market of X58 based systems, I would be grateful for some advice on which CPU you'd put in this system if you wanted to max it out on that front.

TIA!

A lot of us have upgraded to the 6 core Xeon 56xx models. 5650s are now around $75 on ebay IIRC.

Great on going thread here. Skip to the end for more recent posts as it started 1+ year ago.

Thanks man, exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Do you have a recommendation on the ideal hexacore Xeon for my platform? I am not in a rush, I can keep an eye on eBay/Craigslist and snipe something when the right deal comes through.

X5650 (default multiplier 20) would be minimum (cheapest also)
X5660 (21)
X5670 (22)
X5675 (23)

Those are the Westmere EP series (95 watt) 6 Core Xeons, and overclock well. The extra 2 cores makes a big difference :)
The X5650 is around $70. The rest are $100 - $200 on ebay, but these were $1000 - $1500 originally.

I was able to post and do a few things at 4.6GHz @ 1.36v on my X5660

At stock voltages and speeds on a cool day ~ 70F it can idle as low as 16c

Getting one of these is worth it just for the relief in temps from the 45nm generation 1366 chips.

Buy one. They are worth it

Good stuff, I will do some further research and make my decision.

Thanks for the input for sure!
