I've got an E4400 build with 2x4GB of DDR2 right now and I'd like to upgrade to an i5. I was hoping to just get the cpu+mobo for now to cut down on costs. I've heard somewhere that there are boards that will do both, but I can't seem to find any through teh Googles.

No doubt somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the i5 has an integrated memory controller which supports DDR3 only, and hence there is no reasonable way for anyone to make a DDR2 board compatible with i5.

The only DDR2 upgrade path is a faster socket 775 chip, or an AMD quad core which still support DDR2 - that's the direction I took.

Yeah, you're not gonna find LGA1156 mobos that support DDR2.

Same here. I actually couldn't upgrade to 45nm C2Q with my 650i mobo (curse you nVidia!), so I went with the AM2+ platform.

1156 doesnt support ddr 3. Memory controller doesn't support it. Maybe that person was referring to a amd board for socket am3+. Its not compatiible mate. You can start all over on building new rig.
