LGA 775?

Im looking to buy a core 2 processor, and a motherboard that supports it. I know "LGA 775" supports it but what exactly does it mean. Is that the chipset? Or maybe socket type (not that i know anything about it if it was either of them). Then there is 975 and 965...what is that? And as far as picking a board out, which is better and more future friendly? Im possibly going to go quad core in a while so what board supports that?

LGA 775 (also called Socket 775, also called Socket T) is the socket that the chip drops into.

975 and 965 refer to chipsets made by Intel. All motherboards with the 965 chipset support Core 2 out of the box. Some 975-based motherboards will require a BIOS update.
