LGA-1155 Replacement for LGA-1336?

Is LGA-1155 and are Sandy Bridge CPU's a direct replacement for LGA-1336 and Nehalem CPU's?

We know it's a new architecture, but is it meant to compete with LGA-1336?

Not really.

LGA 1155 is the replacement for LGA 1156.

The replacement for LGA 1366 is LGA 2011.

My guess is that more 'mainstream' Westmere (i.e. hexa-cores) will be introduced for LGA 1366 while LGA 1156 goes through a transition to LGA 1155.

Maybe Intel is going to start changing sockets every year or so. Just like car model years. Quite frankly, that wouldn't surprise me.
