LG SATA DVD/RW ripping extremely slowly

My Samsung drive kept bluescreening Vista during rips with DVD Decrypter so I picked up an LG drive. No problems with blue screens but it absolutely will not rip faster than 2x, which is very frustrating. Anyone know what's causing this and how to take care of it? I read a post on another forum that 3rd party IDE drivers could cause something like this but I have none installed.

Thanks.

Is the transfer mode set to DMA? You can check this under Device Manager >IDE/ATAPI controllers. Right click Primary (or Secondary) IDE channel > Properties>Advance Settings, make sure the current transfer mode is Ultra DMA Mode x ( x is for any number, usually 5). You do not want it to be PIO as this mode is much slower and it also eats up your processor's cycles.

Isn't 2X DVD ripping some sort of arbitrary DRM-like limitation? Though I can't remember if the limitation is imposed in the ripping software or the DVD drive's firmware.

Well I checked the DMA settings this morning and they were ok per above so I kept searching around and found that newer LG drives are riplocked. Over at CDFREAKS a member has written a utility that patches drive firmware to increase performance and it worked like a charm. Thanks to ala42 over there for that.
