Many years back I would have considered LG to be a generic brand... cheap stuff. Is it just me, or have they become a leading competitor in quality?

I need to buy a new refrigerator. I was looking at Whirlpool, Kenmore... it all looked like junk, or overpriced for what it was. But then I found this LG french door fridge. I never would have considered an LG appliance, but it looks nice. The specs look okay too.

Anybody else purchase an LG? Is it any good?

LG is rubbish. I am a Refrigeration mechanic, and their equipment is a generation behind. Avoid at all costs. You have been warned.

LG refrigerators are fine. They are all over Europe and Asia.

EDIT: Samsung refrigerators are nice too.

Yes, their air conditioners are rubbish and the refrigerators are poorly put together.
I would never ever ever buy one.

If i was to buy an air conditioner for my house = Daikin
Refrigerator = westinghouse or whirlpool

No matter what fridge you buy, get the extended warranty. I find that most fridges tend to die just outside the warranty period....

It was a couple grand and it is really good.

I have worked a few times at LG plants in South Korea.
It's name used to be "Lucky GoldStar," which was shortened to LG. The South Koreans will trump the Japanese soon, or already are right now, since their quality is high, their engineering discipline excellent, their work ethic strong, and the people are wonderful. Only thing South Koreans could do better is "aesthetic design," which is why the world beats a path to Italy's door; for aesthetic designs of all sorts of products & fashion.

Next in line after South Korea, it'll be India and Vietnam fighting it out.

everyone has their own opinion, but i have had to work on them

Whirlpool is a brand and Corporation. They make/own several brands, Kitchen Aid, Maytag. The fridges all come @ varying prices. Some look nearly identical to them. i wouldn't be surprise if its one factory and its merely different part grades.

I'm a fan of Samsung appliances most of the time, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a well priced LG product.

IMHO, every manufacture/make have its place. LG make great inexpensive ductless split heatpumps that last just as long as Mitsubishi, Lennox, Carrier, GE, Trane, York, etc.... any fridge with options that fit your criteria, low energy consumption, that take the least out of your wallet will serve you fine for years to come.

Refrigeration mech are known to dislike LG, Mitsubishi, and Lennox because they are difficult to service (poor access/cramp quarter). And, heatpumps such as Carrier, York, Trane, etc... cost more because they are design to be servicable.

Yup, LG and Samsung used to make crappy stuffs back in the day. Nowadays, they rock.
Anway, when it comes to home appliances, I prefer LG over other brands.

LG Group has surpassed Sony, they're in a whole bunch of segments (Electronics, Telecom, Chemical Industries, etc.) LG appliance division is 3rd largest appliance manufacturer in the world. LG's rival in Korea is Samsung Group (world's largest conglomerate, world's largest electronic company, and one of the largest in construction). They both used to make cheap products long time ago but now they make really great products at good prices.

I have an LG fridge that's been runing for almost four years. It's a good thing I had a 4 yr-warranty since my ice-maker stopped working earlier this year.
