Got it. It's just not a NEW deal.
It's the same GOOD deal that's been around before.

It's funny that 6 months old is now considered "old".
I am sure it will serve me well for the next 2-4 years.
I seriously doubt that LG is capable of updating the OS on that phone for the next 2 years, much less 4 years.
Hell, does the phone even have KitKat 4.4 yet?
And this is a phone that is supposed to serve as LG's flagship...

I believe the G2 has 4.4.2 almost everywhere now. As usual, Verizon customers have to wait just a wee bit longer than everyone else for updates.

If the phone works so great, as reported by early adopters, I am fine with running the same OS for 4 years. Who needs updates?

Sure you can. You've used a Incredible 2 for this long so you obviously don't care. Just remember that you're on a forum where that matters to us a lot.

It also has good developer support for custom ROMs if you are interested in that.

Also got to thinking to myself that android as an os is pretty mature now and any new versions feel like refinements rather than serious groundbreaking overhauls.

Since that was the bulk of my post, yes. It does matter how you look at it. I look past the "right now" and at the "I save $600/year." Factor in hardware and the actual length of your contract, and I save more.

My situation's math:
On Verizon:
The plan: 2 lines, Unlimited talk + text, 2 GB shared data
The damage: $157/mo
Upfront hardware: $500 (1x$300, 1x$200)
24 month cost: $4,268

On T-Mobile:
The plan: 2 lines, Unlimited talk + text, 6 GB (3 per line, no overages)
The damage: $107/mo
Upfront hardware: $900 (1x$400, 1x$500) (2xNexus 5, one from a third party)
24 month cost: $3,468

Monthly costs include taxes and fees on both carriers. Both rates also account for my work discount. T-Mobile is way faster than Verizon in my city, nearly 3 times as fast.

So, go ahead and spend that $400 on ammo. If we had the same hobby, I'd get to spend $800. Go ahead and factor in sales and "free" phones. I still save more money (~$300) than you. And I'm not even pre-paid. Saying that any recurring cost is inconsequential, especially in light of how badly they may be bilking you, exudes ignorance.

Obviously you may be on some ancient, cheap grandfathered plan and your numbers might not crunch into a savings. But for people getting new phones (and typically plans), your mentality does nothing but throw money away.

Got em coach.

I think this sums it up.

  • I'm upgrade eligible.
  • Don't want to bother switching carriers.
  • Already in for 1 year for the $60/mo deal.
  • Currently have an Inc2 that's 4 years old.
  • Seems like the Lg G2 for "free" is a big win.
Thanks.

I think we can all agree you should have upgraded much earlier :). But congrats on a already good phone.

Do the phone just suddenly stop working if you don't get updates ??

I never mentioned that it did.

And the OP never mentioned that he needed updates for the next 2-4 hrs either.
All he said was that it should serve me well for the next 2-4yrs.
If updates aren't important to him this phone is plenty fast for the next 2-4yrs.
I'd worried about damaging the phone during that time than updates.

What are you trying to say?
That YOU aren't a VZ customer?

I'm a VZ customer.
Good deal for me?
I'm simply stating that even if I were on the sidelines now to pick a carrier, no way in hell would I pick Verizon. It's a bad deal because Verizon leaves you always longing for XYZ phone that will not be coming to Verizon. The CDMA aspect has always been a turn-off for me, and results in useless posts ("Is it coming to Verizon?!?!?!") whenever you see a new phone article.

I just really hope Verizon is OP's only option.

Otherwise it's just money down the toilet.

While that may be true for you, it certainly isn't true for everyone.

As for the OP's original question... Yes, the LG G2 is an excellent phone, and you will love it. And since nobody is going to actually pay you to acquire a phone, getting one for free is a good deal.

As soon as OP said they were keeping the phone longer than 2 years, I was right, no matter what.

Dude...why don't you get off your high horse. We friggen get it...you hate Verizon. Enough of your thread crapping already.

For some people Verizon has the best coverage. It may not be for you but you act like everyone's experience and situation mirrors yours.

The only point I can somewhat agree with him on is that, if you're under a contract, you should be upgrading just as soon as you possibly can. Even if it's to a newer free phone. The cost of that subsidy is built in to your plan on Verizon (at this point) and you're basically throwing money away by holding on to a phone for longer than 24 months.

I'd stop if people would get it through their skulls what I'm actually talking about. You obviously don't.

Keeping a phone for longer than your contract term is literally throwing money away. Nothing is ever actually free.

I didn't argue against Verizon's coverage. I'm well aware that they are the only only option for a lot of people. I've made exceptions for that. I also made exceptions for people with crazy cheap grandfathered plans. I realize that peoples' situations differ. What I don't understand is how people will blindly just throw money away without doing an ounce of research.

So no, you don't "friggen get it."

The problem I'm seeing with this though, is when you upgrade they lock you in for another 2 years. So you're stuck in an endless loop paying the high subsidy prices, even if something else better comes along

What about those who just want the excellent coverage?

Take my situation, for example. I live in Portland, OR. 4G coverage is fairly similar between all the carriers. But as soon as I head out towards the coast (which my family does very often), the coverage varies drastically. I can drive from Portland to the coast and never lose internet coverage. I get 4G LTE in Tillamook! (T-Mobile is 2G.) No other carrier can offer these things. All this is definitely worth the extra money to me and my family.

So, believe it or not, some of us choose Verizon even though it isn't our only option, or just because we're grandfathered in some plan.

Hasn't TMobile solved that problem? Anyone can go sign anywhere without a worry these days and just jump over to TMo without penalty.
