you got that right:|

I dont understand why they cant keep the current specs of SD and have the current specs of bluray

I need a bluray drive and the specs seem like crap. its like going backwards except you can play a bluray. they do this crap on purpose to suck money out of us. they have the ability to make better/faster drives, but want us to upgrade with ea little step; bastards

Gues I will have to wait till something decent come along

Im going out on a limb and saying that this drive is about 3-4 years old technology because it plays HD dvd's which are not even made anymore, so back then this would of been hot for it burned dvds, at the speed that would of been considered fast back then. But I see this as being hot just for the fact it does play BR and HD DVD for around $100 beans. that alone to me is a great deal, for me. the fact it also burns and does LS too, thats cool as well. I dont care it burns at 16x, most my media is 8x speed anyway because Im a cheap bastard. But last I checked you cant get a BR rom for your PC at $100, let alone one that will do HD DVD and BR and burn not only DL/DVD but Cd's too and lightscribe as well.

Not to mention also, that to find one close to this price, they just read Blu ray at 2-4x speed, this one does 6.

So I wouldnt knock it completely for what it is and does at that price with software too.

If I hadn't got a Sony 2X BR drive for $69 last month from MC, I would be all over this! It plays both formats, it comes with software as well and it is from a well-respected company.

Its only around a year old and was one of the only combo drives available at a time where stand-alone combo drives cost $800+. Keep in mind, HD-DVD hasn't even been dead for a year; this time last year the format war was still raging. It originally retailed for $300, I got mine for $225 around this time last year. There's a few reviews showing it burns slightly slower than SD DVD drives, but if burning DVDs is that important to you, there's plenty of drives available for $20-30 that burn DVDs just fine.

Also for those buying it for HD-DVD support...there's a few issues with updating the software. Basically CyberLink killed support for HD-DVD in PowerDVD 8 and also patched out support in PowerDVD 7.3 at some point. So if you want to play HD-DVDs, you'll have to stop updating your software. There's some workarounds that involve copying the HD-DVD .dlls for those really interested in HD-DVD support.

I bought one in the FS/FT forum a year ago. Great drive and love the $5 hd-dvds. I stopped bothering with PowerDVD and the stupid workarounds and just use windvd now.

If I want to hook this up to my home theater setup, how do I:

1. Get DD 5.1 output?

2. Prevent Windows XP Pro from rejecting my HDMI/DVI connection with some kind of copyright error message?

Or won't either of these concerns happen with this drive?

AnyDVD is probably your easiest/best solution.

Thanks for the reply. I checked their website. Their annual licensing fees, etc are so high that I think I would be better off buying a standalone BD player. If AnyDVD is the only alternative to achieve what I want?

Thank you though. I appreciate the suggestion.

Regards,

John

The bundled OEM software will handle this, no need to spend on something like AnyDVD or even PowerDVD 8.

1. Just connect the s/pdif output from your sound card or onboard sound (coaxial or optical toslink) to your A/V receiver or speaker system. Make sure to configure XP and PowerDVD to output via s/pdif.

2. PowerDVD handles all the decoding and HDCP DRM, so long as you have an HDCP compatible GPU and monitor/LCD TV you should be fine.

I have had some issues with HDCP even with my HDCP enabled Redeon HD2600 Pro. AnyDVD HD takes care of that for me, just be aware that HDCP enabled hardware is not full-proof. Another option is to use VGA output instead of HDMI. This will eliminate any HDCP issue if AnyDVD HD is not an option for you.

And if you don't, you can used AnyDVD. Last year it was a lifetime subscription at a large discount. Now you have to renew every year.

No you don't. You can still buy a lifetime subscription. It just costs more.

will it play region 2 discs? I'm assuming so. Aren't most computer dvd drives region free?
