I just bought a LG 32gk650f-b 2K 144hz monitor and Windows 10 notifies me of this error.

"The system has detected a link failure and cannot set the requested resolution and refresh rate. Your display might not support the requested resolution or there may be an issue..."

I was using the latest recommended AMD Radeon drivers for my RX 480. Freesync is enabled on both the Radeon software and monitor settings. I leave the computer on and turn off the monitor at night. My computer doesn't go to sleep but my mouse light comes off (standby mode I guess). I have the computer set to turn off the monitor after 1 hour. When I wake the mouse I can hear Windows giving me a notification through the speakers. This is before I hit the power button on the monitor. The 2560 x 1440 resolution and 144hz is still set correctly when I turn on the monitor although it flickers a little before turning on. Nothing seems to be wrong except for this message popping up, none of the video settings get changed. I bought 2 of these monitors and one is going to a family member who is getting a new computer and I don't want them getting any weird messages.

I installed the optional newest AMD Radeon driver and now the error only happens sometimes instead of all the time. I have tried the Accell display port cable below as well as the display port cable that came with the monitor and the behavior is the same.

Accell B088C-007B-23 DP to DP 1.4 - VESA-Certified DisplayPort 1.4 Cable - 6 Feet, Hbr3, 8K u/60Hz, 4K UHD u/240Hz, 6.6 Feet (2 Meters)

The research I have done seems to point to a software issue. Possibly the AMD software or the power settings in Windows. I've tried every setting in them though and nothing works. I tried setting EnableULPS to 0 instead of 1 in the registry. I've tried unplugging everything and wait for the power to drain out. I've reached a dead end. I'm thinking about just buying an Nvidia card (the Freesync works on this monitor according to other users) because I only see AMD cards affected by this. Perhaps this is normal behavior because the monitor is not on when I wake the computer to do the display port handshake but I want to make sure.

Anyone have any ideas before I go a buy a new video card? Thank you!

Do you have another pc that you can try the monitor on?

Actually I don't. I did open the second monitor and tested it and the same thing happened. Since I tried 2 different display port cables and two of the same monitor I guess I can rule those out for now. That just leaves the video card. I did buy a used GTX 1070 and it will be here in a few days. I'm curious to see what happens.

Another thing you can try is to uninstall the amd drivers, reboot, then let windows install the driver it has. At this point it can’t hurt.

That's what it sounds like, to me, off-hand, but I don't have a lot of personal DisplayPort experience. My feeling is that, DisplayPort re-syncs when monitors come out of sleep, and if the monitor is physically powered-off by you, while it's sleeping, and then you wake up the PC, before you power-on the DisplayPort monitor, the PC has nothing to Sync to, and it complains and leaves an error message up in the corner or whatever, and then when you turn the monitor on again physically, the display Syncs up, and displays the desktop, but the error message is still shown.

Makes sense to my limited understanding, at least.

No luck troubleshooting the software. I'm not sure if it's the RX 480 itself or the drivers. It was happening even with Freesync disabled.

I have now installed the used GTX 1070 and enabled the Freesync and display settings. After testing the sleep issue I am unable to recreate the link failure error which is great. I'm a little dismayed that an Nvidia card works better with Freesync than an actual AMD card. I am unable to speculate why there would be a difference between the two cards when doing the display port handshake. Oh well, I needed a better 1440p video card anyway.

The family member who's getting the 2nd monitor I'm recommending a computer with an RTX 2060 Super so hopefully that all works flawlessly.

Glad you got it worked out.
