Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my existing 24" TN panel to the LG 27EA83. I've read up a bit on it and it seems that there are two versions, the 27EA83, which uses a 10-bit color gamut, and the LG 27EA83R, which uses an 8-bit display.

I'm in Canada and it seems like no online retailer (NCIX, newegg.ca, etc) are carrying the 10-bit model.

Does anyone know what the best way to procure one is? Thanks in advance.

I just want to make it clear that since you mention 10 bit color - 10 bit color is not beneficial at ALL to you. 10 bit color has many pre-requisites: it requires a professional card (eg quadro, firepro) and requires specific firmware and software which are not part of confumer cards (by consumer cards I mean geforce/radeon). Additionally, only specific professional software packages have any type of support for 10 bit per channel color - such as Maya, 3DS max, adobe suite and NONE of these programs use 10 bit color through D3D. It is, again, done through specific drivers which make it not usable on consumer cards.

Consumer cards only support 10 bit color through D3D. You will find that 100% worthless because no D3D software uses 10 bit color - all software packages that use 10BPC are professional in nature and as mentioned above require specific drivers and firmware. Also, Adobe RGB (that's 10 bit color) looks worse than sRGB for 99% of applications unless you spend a great majority of your time calibrating - it looks over-saturated and worse. But, this makes no difference because i'm nearly certain you don't have such a system to support 10 bit color. Let's be clear that 10 bit color is for professionals whose jobs require it. I see this misconception a lot, that 10 bit color is somehow better. That is far from the truth because Adobe RGB has a LOT of calibration, hardware, and software pre-requisites which makes it not applicable to 99.9% of consumers.

Now let's talk about the screen you mention. I've viewed it. It is an excellent monitor, which easily ranks among the best IPS / PLS panels i've seen. I wouldn't say it's the absolute best, as I would give that award to the Samsung S27B970D - but, the 27EA83 *does* cost substantially less (ie 1199.99 vs 849.99). It's a great screen. I think you'll like it a lot. Again - 10 bit color will not benefit you. Unless you somehow are a video editing professional with thousands in gear (such as a quadro video card). Do not bother getting a 10 bit color model, you will be 100% fine with the standard 27EA83 / R. You do not need the -D version.

Has pre-calibrated sRGB, Adobe RGB and Custom mode. In addition it has a programmable LUT. This display is simply fantastic. Blackened also got the models wrong, the D version is the high gamut while R is the standard one and they are not comparable.

5150Joker: Thanks for the link. Just a couple of questions. I read a review about the monitor (the 10-bit version) and they mentioned it's great for gaming and can even overclock its refresh rate. Have you tried this? Also, is the input lag high on your version? I know there was a firmware update, I'm just wondering if it's taken effect on all the monitors being sold or not.

blackened23: Thanks for the 411. No, I'm not a video editing professional. I just want something that's big, has great colors and is good for gaming. To tie in to what I wrote to Joker, this review below mentions overclocking the refresh rate. They seem to have done it with the 27EA83-D and my concern is whether or not the 27EA83R-D can do the same thing.

Mine cannot overclock and I don't know how that guy managed to get his to do it. There was a newer firmware that reduces input lag but there is no way to tell if you have it or not. Although my guess is all current ones being sold are the new revision. I bought mine when they were first released so I might have the older one, not sure. In any case, I don't notice any significant input lag or ghosting with it. However, compared to a 120 hz or 144 hz TN, then it definitely feels like there's more input lag and ghosting.

Joker to check your firmware version.

Turn the monitor off.

Put your finger first over the menu sensor.
Then while you finger is on the menu sensor put your other finger over the power sensor and hold them both your fingers on the menu and power sensor till the monitor comes on and then release our fingers over the sensors.
There will be the normal dialog box (DVI-D) at the top right coner that comes up for a few seconds but then another small dialog box will pop in a couple seconds ON THE TOP LEFT corner of the monitor with the firmware version.
You might have to do this a few times if you don't see it on the first try.

Doesn't work, tried multiple times. Ok finally got into the service menu, it says version 1.11 so that might be the old one.
