Just purchased this monitor and it came with a regular CRT style plugin. Don't these monitors look better with the DVI cable hookup instead of the one that I have? Should I go out and purchase a DVI cable for it?

Yes DVI is better IQ.
 
Now my problem is that the monitor randomly shuts off yet the power button is still lit up... what the hell?

I also went out and just bought a DVI at wal-mart.
