Don't know if it is true for this particular model, but comment I saw over at the CD Freaks website says that LG blu ray drives were rip locked, at least in the past.

Anyone own this model and care to confirm/deny? Thanks.

Also, here's one of the more informative reviews on Newegg from a verified purchaser:

Fast But Intolerant Of Read Errors

Pros: VERY FAST, rips a 2-hr Blu-Ray in almost half the time compared to an LG 10x BD-RW. Improved eject button is easier to find as it's raised, better for sight impaired folks or working in low light. Installation was easy, no driver needed, BIOS found it immediately.

Cons: Completely intolerant of scratches or dirty disks. Compared to other BD-RW's this drive simply doesn't even attempt to "read through" errors, it simply drops to zero and gives up after about 5 seconds! This is NOT the drive for you if you read rental disks like Netflix or Redbox, 3 out of 7 disks failed to read properly today! Same disks did eventually complete in my 10X drive.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully LG simply forgot to address fault tolerance and will release a firmware update which allows this drive to at least make an effort correcting read errors. Instead up upgrading my old 10X drive, now I'll have to keep both in the same machine because this one isn't reliable enough to get the job done. If the disk is perfect, this drive is amazing, unfortunately rental disks are rarely perfect. Makes me skeptical about the integrity of data disks burned by this drive.

I had that drive for a day. I installed it into my computer (running windows 8) and it would blue screen every time I tried to use makeMKV. I was able to manually pull the files from bluray disks but I wanted it to be able to rip and that did not seem to work. I ended up going with another bluray burner and was sad to say the LG did not work out as I got it for a great price at microcenter. JM2C

I have that drive. It rips fine.

Ditto. I've ripped most of my blu-ray collection to my server with this drive and had no issue. I've not tried burning any blu ray discs, but I didn't buy it for that. It was only a few dollars more than the BD-ROMs and it was worth that "in case" I need to burn discs.

Rip lock dramatically caps the performance of ripping commercial disks. There are often simple ways to defeat this, but I believe the 14x LG drives use a different chipset and don't yet have a solution.

Oh ok thanks. Wasn't aware of this issue before.

I got it and it does great. No problems with scratched discs either. Has worked with everything I have thrown at it.

The guy was trying to pirate the movie. Very smart of him to just openly post his experience in the review.:D

Agreed (and not condoned, of course). I want to rip my own collection, but some of my discs are old and may have minor blemishes that would result in similar issues.
