I think the rotary engine is fine, it's 1.3L but it puts out around 220 bhp. That's quite a bit for a car that size.

You're thinking logically though. People want the rotary to be different and have it give a different driving experience. And rotary displacement isn't comparable to a piston engine since it's always in 2-3 cycles at once. Most car buyers really are emotionally driven.
