Lexus LF-A engine sound

I don't see the appeal of this car over an F430. None whatsoever.

Furthermore, I actually think the GTR is a better example of a halo car than the LFA. Its affordable, technologically advanced, and performs similarly.

If Toyota wanted a symbol, they should have went all out and made a Veyron equivalent. Something that says the Japanese are better than the French/Germans...rising sun and all that.

Instead they made a Ferrari clone, which looks like a supra with a body kit.

This car is kick ass. I jizzed myself at the engine sound. If you read the brochure they made the exhaust tank in a similar shape to an opera house.

I don't think this car looks like a Ferrari clone at all, to me it looks better and will probably be built better. It's a unique piece of engineering and I think the biggest thing people have to get past is paying 400 k for a Lexus. Plus only 500 will be made so this car has much more appeal/originality than a Ferrari, which is a common supercar.

Sign me up please 😛 Ill take the Amythyst purple color and blue seats inside 😛

lol wtf, out of all the posts to spam in, they picked this one?

and not even a mention of free ipods

??

Sounds great!

yamaha helped toyota in tune/develop the V10 in the LFA.

in the motorcycling world, yamaha bikes are notorious for low end torque (well, from reviews i've read), but rev and pull like hell at the top end.

IMO the best part about V10 and V12 engines is the sound. 4 bangers pop and fizz, V8s purr, V10s and V12s scream. There is nothing in the world quite like driving a car like that at WOT.

I think it seems pretty cool, but about 3x the price it should be sitting at. God I wish Toyota just brought back the Celica and Supra instead of this (at at the very least, in addition to this).

How bout this :

Base Celica, FR layout, 185hp 1.8L VVTi i4, $20k
GTS Celica, FR layout, 260hp V6, $25k
Base Supra, FR layout, 315hp V6, $30k
Supra Turbo, FR layout, 440hp V6, $38k

🙂

Didn't Toyota have a protype of the new Celica at the Toyota auto show or whatever it was?

Well I'm glad I watched the video before commenting, the last one I saw with in car footage, to me it was the weakest sounding V10 I've ever heard.

It must have been that video, because this one sounds terrific.

Surely, it's massively expensive, but have you seen the video of that carbon fiber loom thing they use to weave the A/B pillars, wow!

How is it a Ferrari clone? The F430 is a mid-engined car whereas the LFA has it's engine in the front of the car (although, behind the front wheels).

I think it looks pretty unique and the sounds it makes are electrifying.

Groan...why not go for the Louis Vuitton interior package while you're at it? 😛

Sounds too much like a Ferrari imitation. No originality whatsoever.

Not really. It doesn't sound like any of the V8 Ferraris (360, 430, 458), or any of the V12 Ferraris (599, F50, Enzo)

The Ferraris have a deeper, more basso note, while the Lexus has a much more high-piched, F1 engine-like character at high RPM.

The V10 of the Lexus naturally sounds different from a V8, so the sound is closer to other V10s (Gallardo) and V12s. However, the LF-A's engine redlines at 9000 RPM (fuel cutoff at 9500), which means it revs about 1000 RPM higher than engines of cars like the Ferrari F50.

Interestingly, however, the LF-A's V10 produces 8 less horsepower and 46 ft-lbs less torque than the Ferrari 458's direct injection V8. In addition, the LF-A's torque peaks at 6800 RPM, compared to 6000 for the 458 Italia. The lack of torque and the peakier torque response are both a bit strange, since the LF-A's engine has more displacement (by 0.3 liters) than the Ferrari's engine.

There is a lot more to horsepower and torque figures than just displacement alone.

The sound difference may be because Ferrari's use a flat plane crankshaft, but then again, you can't really compare a v10 to a v8 or v12.

There definitely is more to HP/torque than displacement, but you would think that there would at least be similar outputs with both engines being high-revving normally aspirated motors and both being in similarly high states of tune. I mean, it's not like we're comparing a truck engine with a supercar engine here. Both of these engines are precision-tuned and carefully manufactured for high performance applications.

That's why I find it so surprising that the LF-A engine is putting out so much less torque despite the displacement advantage. Could the almost 50 ft-lb deficit be due to the lack of direct injection in the LF-A?

DI is not going to add anywhere near 50 ft-lbs.

Regardless, a V8 of equal (or close) displacement is going to produce more torque than a V10 usually.

The engine in the lexus is still a great performer considering the M5's 5L V10 produced 50 less horsepower. It could be that it just has a greater bore to stroke ratio making it peaky.

I'd be willing to guess the Ferrari is tuned much more extensively for performance. I bet the service intervals on the Lexus are twice as long and half as in depth/expensive.

Sounds great, the ass end of it looks awful though.

Very meh looking car to me.
