YTMV - Your Taxes May Vary

Link

Manual search for "A0106410"

New Information, 9/4/03:

Dell Home seems to be charging tax in a lot more places now, but -

266.86 (subtotal price - before possibly applicable sales tax :( ) - 2% eBates (5.33 - also mildly dependent on the inclusion of tax) - 40MIR = $221.53. That's the lowest price on the net right now by far for a 1GB USB 2.0 keydrive. And yes, this IS a USB 2.0 high speed drive.

Rebate is good until 9/30, so one COULD still take a gamble and wait for a 20% off promo. It's 15% now.

And yes, before people start asking about "is this REALLY USB 2.0" - yes - it is USB 2.0 High Speed. And no, you're not going to get 480MBps out of this thing. Why? Because it's a passive device - no power source past the paltry 500mA provided by the USB port itself. Only powered USB 2.0 devices (HDs, CD-RWs) can reach 480MBps, and even then, very few get towards the theoretical limit. 6-8MB/sec read/writes are many many times faster than floppies, so be satisfied with the fact that they're 6-8X faster than their USB 1.1 counterparts. :)

I think the speed limitation has more to do with the limits of flash memory rather than the USB power characteristics. I don't think you can get any faster than 6-8 MB/sec from flash no matter what. Having said that, I have a 256 MB Jumpdrive Pro, and for most intents and purposes, it is indistinguishable from a regular hard drive. I'm sure you would notice the difference if you are benchmarking or transferring masses of MP3's and mpegs, but for day to day stuff, it's just like the real thing.

I got the 512mb version from Dell for only $60 AR about a month ago. I think the 1gb is convenient but too pricey. 2mb also coming and I see there's a 4gb compact flash now so...

btw, I love it. It came formatted with FAT and got corrupted somehow after only a couple uses. I then reformatted with FAT32 and fine since. Very fast!

Keeping in mind this deal will be around for quite some time (just that it's rather hot right now) with the usual promos Dell offers.

No pressure to buy now, and the price could very well go DOWN in a month.

Bump for new info

Heh. Ironic on my last posting I say the price could go DOWN in a month and exactly one month and the price HAS dropped...though the sales tax went on... :|
