lever action rifles

pontifex

Lifer
I want to get a lever action rifle, a replica of something that was used in the Old West.

I'm looking at Henry Golden Boy. Thats the style I like. I know most people here are into the assault style rifles like the ar-15 and such, but does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on what i'm looking for?

I want to get one in .22 caliber just for target shooting.

Go with the henry, they are decent guns.

I had never heard of Henry until now when i started searching for the guns, so i wasn't sure if they were good quality or not. i did see they won some award from a gun magazine in 2001.

Winchester also makes "cowboy style" lever-action rifles, but not in the .22LR size. Check 'em out here. Looks like the .25-35 is the smallest shell they're chambered for. I personally have one in .30-30, and it's a nice rifle. Easy to load, clean and shoot, nice feel to it. Good hunting rifle! 🙂

I have a Winchester model 94 (IIRC) in .44 Magnum. Man, that thing kicks like a mule too. I had to put a decent recoil pad on it just so that I wouldn't flinch when shooting it.

I used to shoot SASS (cowboy action shooting). The one you want is a winchester 44-40. You can get lighter reloads if you want. But don't go with a .22. You would regret it.

why? i just want it for target shooting/plinking, nothing else. i don't know how much 44-40 ammo is but .22 is dirt cheap.

while we're on the topic of guns...

i haven't bought a gun in a while and that was a pistol, never bought a rifle. how long would it take to get paperwork and all that stuff done for a rifle? I live in PA

Should be able to be in and out of there in less than 30 minutes. Atleast when I was in PA, it didn't take that long, although that was 15 years ago.

You should be easily able to do it on your lunch hour. If you buy one, make sure you keep it in your trunk since I've heard of people being fired for having firearms in the car when their employer has a "no firearms" policy.

i don't think i'd buy one from there though. i'm pretty sure my uncle could get me one a lot cheaper.

my last gun was a Taurus PT 99. Taurus' suggested price is $633. I got it for about $333 through my uncle.
