So has anyone here gotten leukemia or known anyone with it? How did their treatments go and were the treatments successful?? I just needed to get some information as its pretty hard to cope with at the moment. Thanks a bunch.

My 10 year old little sister died August 6th 2002 of Leukemia.
Radiation and a blood transfusion made no difference. :(

Same here for my dad also summer 2002. About 18 months after detection.
It was a very surreal and sad time :(

Thanks everyone. I just wish they could come up with a perfect cure for this, but I guess it just doesn't work that way.

current treatments seem to hold leukemia pretty well in control for a cousin of mine who never had to do chemo. He's on a pilot progtram, where he had to take a small handful of pills after every meal. Sem to live a pretty normal life. Chemotherapy is something that should be avoided at all cost, as it effectively destroys everything... your body's immune system, bone marrow, liver, etc... in addition to what you're trying to control. In the long run, i believe it does more harm than good.

Sorry I didn't mean to bring you down. I'm sure there have been significant advances made even in the past 4 years. Leukemia is not a death sentence and I know there is a good percent who are able to continue living. However you are affected by this I encourage you to never give up hope and keep a fighting attitude. Good luck and you have my prayers.

What were these pills your cousin was taking, and how were they not chemotherapy?

For the OP, don't get your medical advice from ATOT, see above as to why.

There are many different kinds of leukemia, some worse than others. Sometimes the age at which you get it seems to play a role in how aggressive the disease is, e.g. Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia is usually not so aggressive in the elderly, but in the (extremely rare) cases of childhood CLL it's much more aggressive.

There are some leukemias for which there are very effective chemotherapies these days - in most cases it's still better to catch the disease as early as possible of course.

edit: to the OP; my degree is in leukemia research - PM me if you feel like it. I'm a research guy, though, not a clinician.

yeah, i apologize for not knowing the specifics, my cousin was in his early 20s, and rather healthy, i'll be the first to admit that there is a ton i don't know about it...

One of my grrandfathers died from leukemia. Hopefully they've found some kind of releif from it. No cure, but some treatment that at least lengthens the life expectancy of thosw who get it.

My brother died in 1998 from Leukemia, it came back after a few years in remission.
Worst is that he died so suddenly after it returned
