Hey all,

So my summer internship is winding to a close, and it's time to get a letter of recommendation from my boss. I already asked him whether he would write one for me and he happily agreed. However, I'm clueless as to how these are supposed to be handled...

I would be using his recommendation for two things:
- Business school (mba) applications in a few years
- As a reference for employers when I interview for a full time job in a few months

Would I have him write two separate letters - one geared towards an MBA admissions office and one towards prospective employers? And with these two letters, I would just make photocopies when I needed to send some out right?

Any advice would be most appreciated
Thanks

Write both letters and send them to him. He will appriciate it.

As weird as it sounds, after I write a letter of recommendation for my better students, I ask them to proof read it and point out any ommisions that would make them appear better to wherever the letter is being sent. If I'm willing to write the letter, it means that I genuinely believe that my student is worthy of whatever admission/scholarship/thing that they need the letter for. Thus, I'm more than happy to amend the letter. Oddly, most people seem to be uncomfortable with suggesting changes. (Either that, or I'm the letter of recommendation writing king. At a recent banquet honoring a few students, my letter of recommendation for a student who received the 2nd largest scholarship was quoted quite a bit.)

I can tell you that a business school won't care about an internship letter of recommendation in a few years unless you are applying straight out of college.
