Letters of recommendation for grad school...

When you ask a prof for a letter of recommendation, do they write a letter and send it to the school or do they write a generic letter and I send copies? I was planning on applying to two or three places. Do I need to ask my profs for a letter per institution?

It's usually a generic letter that they give to you which you include with your app.

usually it's a general letter, but I've had some people offer to tailor it to individual schools for me. since it's 2 or 3 schools, it wouldn't hurt to bring up the idea.
