He probably just dropped the hint that he would move to boost his ego, and his wallet.....

Letterman's a freaking bore, and ABC execs had their heads up their collective asses for even considering the change, let alone making it public. Nightline makes money -- just not as much as Letterman's show, but there are other advantages to having an institution with the credibility of Koppel and Nightline. It goes on the books as "good will" (really), and no airhead comic can bring that to a major network's news operation.

There are also those that believe that Letterman is comic genius and their opinion counts just as much as yours.:)

Bah, I would like to see you do his job. If he was such a "freaking bore", explain how the audience is always full, viewership is excellent, and CBS did NOT want to loose his ass.

Nothing personal against Letterman, but I think his "humor" isn't. It's empty drivel. That's just MHO, but that's the opinion that matters most to me when picking what I laugh at. :D

You must have Letterman and Leno confused. Leno is the superficial, Hollywood star. Letterman is the down-to-earth host who is actually funny.

if you think Letterman spouts "empty drivel", then you haven't seen what Leno is capable of.

And what kind of credibility does Koppel have that anyone at CNN/MSNBC, or any other major news network lacks?

News shows need good producers/stories, a compelling person to tell the story would be even better, Koppel no longer fits that mold.
