It does indeed feel like something written by somebody on the internet with a moderate education trying to intimidate somebody else. I'd look up the attorney's name and see if he/she really exists.

Often non-competition clauses are signed when you agree to commence employment, not when you leave.

That letter looks like something I'd write, I wouldn't be suprised if it wasn't even written by a lawyer.

um yeah, but some companies want you to sign them as you leave. they try to slip it in with severance packages or ESPP/stock options stuff.
