Let's try an optional subscription model... Patreon or other?

Hey,

There has to be a better way to read Anandtech than with some of the ads I see on a daily basis. I don't mind the relevant ads from tech companies. But I have installed an ad blocker recently (using Privacy Badger at the moment) simply to get rid of the "From The Web" ads at the bottom of each article page. They drive me crazy, they are sleazy and irrelevant for Anandtech readers. Also, are they secure? If I click on one, can you guarantee that it is a reputable website, that it uses reputable ad services themselves (think Meltdown and Spectre)?

Of course I feel guilty for using an ad blocker, I have tried configuring it to allow all ads except "From the Web" but it's not reliable to do so. I know the Anandtech crew have to eat and feed their families too and I want to support them...

How about a optional subscription model to absolve guilt of using an ad blocker. You wouldn't be the first website to go this route (see CGP Grey on patreon). You could use a platform like Patreon and offer simple bonuses or content to encourage people to support you. For example, a special avatar in the forums, special thanks on the site, an extra podcast, or a news letter. I have come to trust and enjoy Anandtech's take on technology and tech news. I would pay for more content in this area for example editorial or opinion work.

Thanks
Scott

I agree. I would do $5/mo subscription, to forgo ads. I do run a script- and ad-blocker (there's a lot of shady crap out there!), but I would hate to think one of my favorite sites was losing money due to individuals like myself, that simply want more control over their content.

$10/mo is a bit much for me, that's the price of one of my internet connections. Unless they let us stream movies or something. 😛

Patreon has levels. But this doesn't sound like something Purch would do, whereas old AnandTech might have considered it (and did have a subscription thing at one point before I joined the forums).

Which required a lot of work and which less than 1% of the members used.
