Most of the music that I grew up on was either jazz or soul, but over the last few years I've been gravitating more and more towards rock. Just last week I picked up the "Nothing Safe" album by Alice in Chains, I've been playing it non-stop for the last few days. Of course that means I'm now stoked to go out and find some more music that's similar to AIC. But I've also been curious about a few other bands as well, so I was hoping I could get some opinions and recommendations on the following:

I have'nt heard these groups yet but I'm interested in hearing their music:

Jane's Addiction
The Cult
Tool
The Flaming Lips

These are groups that I've heard a few songs by and I'll be looking to buy some of their albums:

Led Zeppelin
Smashing Pumpkins
Green Day
Mudhoney
Disturbed

Do yourself a favor and add these (if you have not listend to them already)

- Queensryche
- Iron Maiden
- Judas Priest

* some of the best rock/heavy metal male vocals you'll ever hear (and the music is awesome too!)

can you recommend a few songs of their to check out? I've heard Queensryche's music before and it was good stuff, I've heard of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest but can't recall any of their music.

And since I'm asking questions any of you guys play guitar? I'm gonna try to teach myself to play starting this week.

I've found Amazon's CD ratings invaluable for researching albums. Some other bands in the same scheme as AIC would be Godsmack, Days of the New, and Mad Season. A little different but similar would be Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana; or newer Foo Fighters and Audioslave.

I've had Nevermind and Ten in my collection for awhile now, in fact those were probably the first few rock CDs I've ever bought.

Check out the band MASTERMIND. Those guys are great metal/prog. Also check out Anekdoten, IQ, Porcupine Tree, DFA, Balleto Di Bronzo, Devil Doll, Magma.

I think all of those will be to your liking.

That Audioslave album is great, I recently bought records by Soundgarden and Rage but I have'nt gotten around to listening to them yet.

Queensryche: Operation Mindcrime and Rage for Order

If you want to try some old laid back 80's try (Japan, This Mortal Coil, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus and The Cure).

Well since everyone's bombarding you with hard stuff, I'll take the other route and say you should get Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots since you have The Flaming Lips on your list. One of the best albums of all time. If you like that, check out Beck, Wilco, Radiohead, Interpol, Travis, White Stripes, etc etc etc.

AC/DC isn't too bad. Love some of their songs, but they also have some really...really bad ones.

The Cult is pretty good as well.

Long way to go with a black angel at your side...
