I absolutely hated the tom tom I had in NY, Garmin nuvi was a lot better but it still wasn't as nice to use as my VW's built in navi.

google nav on android phones is the best hands down, in my experience. the only thing is it needs a data connection.

You can also get MapDroyd which downloads the maps locally so you do not need a data connection.
