Where I grew up that was called the "heel" of the bread loaf. In my opinion that is the best part of the entire loaf. My wife hates that part so I always get them. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
Crust or Heel. Sometimes I eat it, sometimes I don't. Usually use it to keep the other slices fresher. If I don't eat it I usually toss it. Making Croutons or Crumbs with it makes a lot of sense though.
We always called it the butt of the bread. I am the only one I know who likes them. I love bread crusts and the butt of the bread is mostly all crust. I really like them as french toast slices since they don't absorb much egg.
Depends on how the store-bought loaf is sliced. If they're "normal sized" pieces, I will use them like any other slice of bread...especially good for pb & j sammiches, but also fine for toast. If they're just little thin wimpy bits, then I might just toss em.
Now the heels of homemade bread...you try to take that...I'll cut you three ways... long, wide, and deep.
Heel is what it was called where I grew up. Usually I tossed em, but if you soak them in butter they were good. The crusty side meant the butter didn't lead through.
I usually reach past the crust end nearest the bag opening to grab slices. Leaving the end there seems to help in the other slices not getting too dried out. If they're still in good shape by the end of the loaf i'll eat them. If not i'll toss them outside for the birds or whatever.
