More companies are coming out with games that are more than Atari era scrollers. The thing is that a lot (most?) of the good games aren't on the Market. Check out Gameloft's page:

http://www.gameloft.com/download-games/android-games/most-recent/

I just sprung for Modern Combat: Sandstorm HD.

Interesting article on the situation:

edit:
Gameloft is now doing free trials.

Very brave of you, especially after reading about the difficulties with re-downloading purchased titles.

Anyone who doesn't know how or is too lazy to backup Android APK's deserves to pay a premium.

Aren't the apps/games you downloaded just tied to your Google account so that when you get a new phone/reset your old phone/etc you can just re-download everything again?

How do you play the game?

Do you use mind control since there are no buttons?

Have you tried Quake3 port on XDA?

I tried Let's Golf and it's like a lite version of Hotshot Golf. Not bad but something is missing. Doesn't have the fun and addictive factor of Hotshot.

Also tried Asphalt 5 racing game. It supports Galaxy S 6 axis motion sensor so you steer and race by tilting the phone. Seemed like a fun game with impressive graphics but only tried for about a minute on my friend's Vibrant.

I like Homerun Battle 3d and Super KO Boxing 2. Simple fun and free.

I don't think any of above games even push Galaxy S graphic power potential.

I've never had that problem downloading stuff I purchased and I've used many different ROMs on my phone. I don't know anyone from Apple or Android camp that has had any problems re-downloading stuff they purchased after they did a fresh reset of the phone.

The only Gameloft game on the Market is Asphalt5 HD. The rest you have to buy from their online store, and they send you a link to download the APK. The APK itself is stored in the /sdcard/download folder. When I bought Dungeon Hunter HD, I simply copied the APK from that folder to my computer. If I ever need to re-load it, I'll just copy it back over.

Oh yea, when you download the APKs, they're just called "Gameloft.apk" so you'll need to rename it to avoid it being overwritten if you buy more than one.

also, if you save the email you will still have that link. Not sure how long that link stays active though???

Yea that is what I thought, which is what made me confused when this talk of backing up the apk files came up.

Some people just do it so it makes loading it all up faster than having to re-download stuff from the market.

I have a pretty large list of apk's that I didn't get from the Market. I keep a copy of the apk's on my sd and another copy on my PC. Since these games aren't downloaded from the market, they get the backup treatment too. This is besides my Titanium backup folders.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Actually really good. Nice time waster, and it's not one of those "cutesy" RPGs that has no depth and doesn't take itself seriously. It's got character stats, a good inventory, skills and spells (which are used through fairys... as far as I can tell, you can only have one fairy active at a time, but can switch any time). You can have 3 active skills at once in a quick-bar, and a bunch of passive ones.

Combat is a little simplistic, you just move towards an enemy, it targets the closest one, and you tap the attack button once and your char and the enemy exchange hits till one of you dies. You can cast spells or use skills without interrupting combat, though.

Great graphics, most people I show it to can't believe it's actually a game, a few people have told me I was playing a trailer for a PS2 game.

It's well worth the $5.

Yet another nail in Android Market's coffin. Gameloft is boycotting them AND doing free trials.

Google needs to get this figured out before the Market is written off 100%

IMO, this is more Gameloft's problem than Google's. The won't use the market because they don't like the 24hr refund policy or the 30% cut to Google. I've noticed they have some really crappy customer service, too.

I won't be giving them any more money than the $8.50 I've already given them till they put their games in the Market.

Besides, you can't even buy their games on AT&T unless they're in the market.

Gameloft not using the market won't have any effect on the market's success at all, it's completely insignificant. They will eventually use it though, it's inevitable. A tiny company like Gameloft won't stay away from the huge amount of money the market would bring them.

I used to stick up for the market...now I think it can DIAF. Trying to find something useful on there is beyond a pain. Unless you know exactly what you are looking for (name of app, Dev name), its next to impossible.

Google needs to either cut out the crap or give more search options than just title.
