You don't have to be good at something to know that someone else is doing it wrong.

If I go to a doctor because I've got a compound fracture and he busts out some Bondo, fiberglass sheets, and zip-ties, I should be able to say that he doesn't have any idea what he's doing, despite the fact that I also don't know how to fix the problem.

Your right on some levels though comedy speaks to different people in different ways. To dismiss someone because you dont understand the comedy culturally or if it doesnt speak to you doesnt mean it doesnt speak to someone.

Always reminds me of one of my favorite quotes.

There are two things I hate in life. One is people who are intolerant of other peoples culture-comedy included- and the dutch...

I dislike Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the cable guy but I dont dismiss them offhand because there are lots of in bred hillbillies that find that shit funny. To each their own.

As someone who has studied the fine arts and taught them for most of my life I can firmly say that beauty or the lack thereof is in the eye of the beholder.

Unless being crass counts as comedy, Sarah Silverman.

some people find crass funny and sarah silverman while annoying can work a crowd.

Did you date a jewish girl who took your manischevits ?

Not funny: anyone who was a regular on SNL in the last 30 years.

The cast of the U.S. Version of The Office.

I used to write for TV and film and you would be surpirsed how hard their job is.

Wait a minute. Why the hell does this matter? Do you read crappy books because it's hard to write novels? Do you listen to crappy music because it's hard to make good songs? The statement doesn't make any sense. If you buy a lemon of a car do you cut them a break because making good cars is hard? A comedian is either funny to you, or not. I agree with the OP that a lot of modern "comics" aren't very funny at all. You can tell you're listening to one when the audience is cheering and clapping, but not laughing.

It doesnt matter at all. Was just mentioning that different people have different aethetic senses shaped by their experiences. If you have ever performed comedy or even theater at the high school level you would understand this.

The point I was making is dismissing art or comedy that you dont like or that doesnt appeal to your taste or style is being obtuse at best or at worst simple.

Agree 100%

Most of what het mass media pushes out as good music is utter crap. At the same time you have Skunk records on the west cost and Daptone on the East. But there is no good music. What utter crap. To poster #2 of this thread, you probably are out of work because you suck at your job.

if the thread was titled comedians who I dont think are funny I wouldnt have responded.

To say there is no good music at all and cite mainstream music as the only music out there you clearly know nothing about music.

Most mainstream stuff is fluff. There is a ton on the fringes thats actually pretty good. I can link some very good classical music if you would like.

Hating a bunch of crap you dont like doesnt really make any sense. If you dislike it just remain apathetic. Hating is so strong in these kind of threads.

Joe Derosa and Andy Kindler are just insufferable.

I've never really gotten why Jerry Seinfeld is so popular.

Because of his show. I personally never thought his stand up was that funny but it really is the greatest sitcom of all time.

Steve Carell. He's just not funny. The Office isn't funny and nothing he's been in has been funny (or if it was, it was inspite of him...like Dispicable Me).

Also, Will Farrell isn't really that funny. He has one or two funny movies, but those movies would have been funny with almost anyone in the role. Talladega Nights, for instance.

One guy who is funny, though, is Stephen Lynch.

Well said. Seems to be more and more of this here. Never saw such a bunch of curmudgeons with nothing better to do that tell everyone what they don't like.

Dennis Miller is freaking hilarious, it's just over a lot of people heads.
Miller quit being funny once he became partisan in his act. and the same thing happened to Lenny Bruce when he started to moralize too much. Miller isn't as clever as he thinks but appeals to middlebrow people who have an inflated sense of their own intelligence.

Kind of balanced out though by the people with nothing better to do than tell everyone how to think. I'd say it's a wash.

Gabriel Iglesias is funny once. Every special he's put out has been pretty much the same stuff though so he's lost his luster, but I liked him when he was new.

I agree with Aziz, he's not funny. I don't get his appeal

Kevin Hart is pretty damn funny though IMO.

I'm a fan of stand-up, and this thread is stupid. The only thing more subjective than comedy is stand-up comedy.

Saying that people like Aziz or Kevin Hart aren't funny despite them selling out huge arenas for comedy shows on the regular is like saying you can't eat beef because I'm a vegetarian.

FWIW, I'm not a vegetarian.
