Let's settle this: Comic or Anime?

I don't know... I don't know.. With the release of X:2, I did a little reading on Xmen... I was awed by its depth beyond the surface of what the movie showed.... I'm a huge anime fan because anime provides great action & mature philosophical themes. I think comics fall a little short in terms of thought provoking philosophical depth. They're often too narrow, rarely dealing with things out of superheroes whereas various anime portray life's pain, war, death, religion and so on...

So I ask you, which do you think is better and why?

Anime or Comic?

The X-Men comic has always dealt with issues that didn't seem "comic" like.

Read the first X-Men graphic novel "God Loves, Man Kills". It dealt with social issues, religion and prejudice.

nice. i wish there were comics on the big screen. Not reenacting by actors/actresses but comic movies.. just like anime movies... If you look at some of the anime movies.. the animation is simply stunning. They treat the perspective as if it's the real camera recorded..

huh? can you distinguish the terms anime and manga? wait.. manga just means it's on paper right? well that doesn't make manga = comic. They both derive from totally different styles and perspective...

Right. Manga is in itself a completely distinctive and unique form of printed comic.

Right. Manga is in itself a completely distinctive and unique form of printed comic.

ditto, have you ever read Slam Dunk? Best manga of all time.. deals with high school basketball players... their dedication, failure, and perseverance...

I think manga's fall short of comics because they all seem to have a certain ending and such. With the X-Men world, however, the comics just continue going and going, you can still follow up on Wolverine, etc.

Slam Dunk is the best anime of all time. I still think that american cartoons are better than anime, the action usually just seems better, i don't like the delay of action in anime.

you obviously haven't read Slam Dunk... it went on and on for years... kids just entering HS, become better players, and years later graduate from HS and enter college.. new friends come and go.. old friends leave and reappear.. etc.. ah the memories...

DragonBall is also a good kiddie example of a long plot.. started 1984 and ended 1993. Goku as a kid, growing up, gets married, have kids.. Gohan gets married, etc.. a great masterpiece indeed.. (i mean the manga.. not the animated.. animated is just horrible and watered-down for kids.)

I'm not sure what you're comparing... comics vs. manga? comics vs. anime? manga vs. anime? If it's the first one, then I'd say it's a draw. When you discuss the thematic differences between the two you seem to be citing the best in manga and the worst in comics and that's not a fair comparison.

of course, I'm not really into comics but am open to some of the great ones out there. So it's your job to recommend me some good ones beyond the typica spiderman/xmen stuff I only know of.

Well, considering a TON of animes are based on the manga... anime is an outgrowth of manga/comics from the Japanese standpoint. But US comics are going toward live action cinema now.

Would you make the comparison of movie vs comic? Sometimes it's a little unfair... like in many animes where it doesn't completely retell the manga or have a chance to do it well. It's been a while since I've read a good comic book though... I recently had a chance to read all the Sandman comics, great stuff. I quit reading comics quite a while ago.

the poll question should really be comic vs manga and anime vs animation based on comics (cartoons?)

depthwise, anything on paper will beat out all animation, except in the case of cowboy bebop where the action sequences won audiences over from what i hear anyway.. (didn't read the manga of it, but loved the anime.)

it seems like the question boils down to your preference in western or japanese graphic novels and in this case, i prefer anime/manga combo.

I would say it depends on the comic or anime. Put an option for I like both the same amount.

anime/manga story lines are generally better IMO because the stories actually do come to an end, unlike spider-man, super-man, etc where the hero never dies. Also, comic books always seem to focus on the main character as a super hero whereas the main character of a manga is not necessarily a super hero (see Naruto, Nadesico, etc). also manga makes the reader more emotional and main/antagonistic characters can actually die (unlike the Joker)!
