Let's say you're a college student looking at ~40 days with no work during the summer...

Where do you look for job listings? I tried craigslist, there's nothing there locally. Maybe i'll try classified ads too.

I have a full time job at a school, but we're on a 40 day summer break now and I'd like to make a little money on the side. I don't want to do a short contract position because I'm going on vacation in mid July.

I guess most people that need work done don't know where to turn other than GeekSquad, but I was just wondering if there was something someone knew about that could help.

This isn't a bad idea if you put yourself out there. Tell them you have had experience for x amount of years. Have relatives refer you to companies and other small businesses in the area. Make business cards, buy an advertisement, make flyers. You'll be competing against some others, so charge competitively. Good luck!

My relatives do recommend me for jobs when they hear of them, and I have 4 or 5 people that I do work for whenever they need it, but that only adds up to an average of 2-4 hours of work per week.

I charge $35 for the 1st hour, $30/hr. after that. I think that's very competitive.

Grab a phone book, call small doctor and lawyer offices and get their fax numbers. Fax them a flyer with your rates and state that you do on-site service. You will be surprised at the responses you get.

you mean along the lines of, "quit spamming our fax machines or we'll sue your pants off"?

I apprecciate the suggestion, but when I worked at Staples people would come in and fax a ton of flyers like that to small businesses, and we'd get all kinds of responses from very mad people. I'm pretty sure it's legal but if I owned a business and got a fax like that there's no way I'd hire them.

I might try the phone method though.

Actually, junk faxes like that are prohibited by federal law, with large fines per fax if someone really wanted to sue over it. Look here for more info.
