Lots of discussion in the Walking Dead thread got me thinking. How would you prepare your "base"? What kind of defenses would you have and how big would your "base" be? Let's say you want to be able to defend it and farm on it and what not. And it wouldn't just be you. You'd have other people (maybe other survivors if you're nice or just your own relatives and friends).

probably head towards an empty prison, with real high walls and barb wires.. you got food, medication, some weapons, hopefully no prisoners :)

Zombie prisoners can be cleared. Not a bad choice.

like it better than farm, those wooden post fence didn't hold the back at all.. at least some prison has stronger fences.. hopefully you're high enough in the tower to practice shooting :)

I would see if I could get into a Costco or other wholesale club and wait out the zombies. They should be decomposed enough not to cause trouble in a month or two.

Then I would head away from the coast and then north. Less people around and the cold should slow down the zombies. If that is not an option try to go to a wealthy area where they have large properties that are enclosed by fancy iron gates.

Why not just cut down some large trees and build your own along with some other people in a good area to do it?

How would a bunch of zombies like in the walking dead even get started so it would be a problem? They are stupid and slow, vs smart fast armed humans.

This.
Would have enough surplus of food, and stuff, to last some time. Just barricade entrances.

Not This

You are forgetting the human aspect of the zombie Apocalypse, everyone is going to head straight to get what they can from a place like that.No Base stay Moving only chance to live.

Heh this, sure you might make it there, but so will seven thousand other people.

Talking about zombies is the dumbest thing ever.

A close second to reading about zombies - and yet you clicked on this thread. ;)

If we're talking The Walking Dead zombies, then all I need to counter them is a loud vehicle. When a group is spotted, just drive and lead them away, they will continue to go in that direction.

I always thought this would be a good place. Its pretty defensible with no windows, solid walls, and a nice roof for 360 degree sight lines. You might even be able to seal the roof, get some soil, and have a little farm up there. Lots of food inside, plenty of alcohol for Molotov cocktails. And I'm sure there is an aluminum bat, which is all I'd need for a weapon. Assuming these are traditional zombies and not virus infected 28 Days or L4D type zombies.

The major problem is lots of other people would have the same thought, if not initially, eventually. So you are dealing with zombies and people. It would turn into the gas refinery in Road Warrior. Although you could use the zombies as a defense wall, and when people come just make a lot of noise to attract the zombies to take them out.

I think the cop and daughter in 28 Days had it right for the most part. Pick a highrise and seal it off. I think the cities would empty out pretty quick, and you'd just need to scavenge from time to time. I would put a boom box on the street, and when a crowd forms just drop Molotov cocktails on them. Just do it over and over.

I'd look for a two story house with a single staircase with a bathroom on the second level. The staircase would need to be destroyed and replaced with a ladder that could be pulled up if needed. There would also be a retractable ladder placed outside two of the second story windows for entrance and exit.

This would allow me to remain on the second level without worrying about any zombies reaching me.

Next, I'd begin hoarding water, food, clothing, weapons, ammo, and medical supplies.

high walls, and a way to set fire on the other side (so they dont make a body staircase)

large boat or small island would work very well too
