Let's say Conroe and AM2 came out today

And you could get a Conroe @ 2.0ghz + decent o/cing mobo for $300 that o/cs to 2.9ghz

Or you could get an AM2 @ 2.0ghz + decent o/cing mobo for $300 that o/cs to 3.1ghz

We're also ignoring things like power consumption, TDP, etc...

------------

Which would you get? :p

edit: changed it up a bit

Well, since we're making assumptions here...I'm assuming that I have millions of dollars, so I'd buy one of everything. ;)

Assuming equal performance, equal cost, equal power, equal overclocking potential I would....

Choose the one that has a better looking barebone system from Shuttle. SFF ftw.

Intel. Because Otellini is teh sexay! j/k
Seriously though, it depends on which platform matures faster.

well then it goes down to which mobo is better. but all being equal and arbitrary... i think AMD's packaging is sexier, so i'll go with that.

I'd go with AMD because it's a safe bet that it'll go through 2 or 3 more core revisions before you need a new motherboard/chipset.

AMD since a more equal market share will ensure that both companies stays in business.

It would be overall cost vs. performance of system. I run over 200 Intel comps and about 10 AMD systems so I'm no fanboy - I just want performance per dollar, thanks.

I would probably go for AMD in fear of Intel's ever-changing chipsets so if I ever did decide to upgrade the processor I wouldn't have to change the motherboard.

AMD for upgrade flexability, better heatsink (most likely), and just to insure that AMD would not go out of business. Since without AMD...all hell breaks loose with intel.

AMD, mostly because AMD has kicked butt for heat output, not to mention AMD's FSB implementation is much cleaner, reliable and scalable (Hypertransport versus GTL+, HT ftw).

Everything equal, AMD. I have a slight bias for the underdogs. However, my main rig will be Conroe by end of year.

The cheaper one

<doesn't give a damn about who makes it as long as its good

I also notice that people are picking AMD just by making up assumptions that weren't included in the original post...

You obviously didn't read the first post or title - he said to assume performance was identical and o/c potential was identical.

I'd probably choose Intel for a few reasons:

1.) it's running 65nm while AM2 is starting out at 90nm, so the Intel should run cooler (temperature is important to me).
2.) Intel typically releases very mature chipsets from the get-go. NF5 should be fine since it's a minor upgrade, but I'm conservative with Nforce chipsets; I loaded up on NF2 and NF4 boards (both of which I still use in rigs today), while I stayed away from NF1 and NF3.
3.) Just to see what Intel's been doing these days. Because nothing since Northwood has attracted me to Intel. Everything from Prescott to the LGA chipset to BTX to dual-core prescott has left a bad taste in my mouth. Conroe looks like Intel finally being Intel again.

Regardless, as I've always done, I'd probably go to one, use it for a bit, then sell it and go to the other one. AM2 looks unattractive to me right now - an almost meaningless update to S939 (at the moment). When 65nm comes out for AMD, with higher clocks, THEN I'll be back onboard :) .

To bad the wont be equal at the same clockspeed. :( my poor opty is going to get its A$$ kicked in a few months. So much for having one of the fastest cpus. Oh well.

Another vote for AMD, because, like others have mentioned, I don't want to have to upgrade my mobo everytime a new processor comes out. ~18 Months on a s939 board and its still kicking.
