Cameron said that he was planning this as a series of films, so I'm sure he has some good plot points already drawn up. I think story wise it will be a deeper and more gripping tale.

Effects, probably more of the same. I don't know how much more fantastic and incredible the visuals could get.

As far as box office goes, who knows? Will it beat $2 billion in worldwide gross like the first? Conventional wisdom says yes, and I will agree. If the film is good (and I'm sure it will be), I expect a fairly huge opening weekend with some dropoff, but staying power like the first film.

If Avatar does well at the Oscars, I predict the second film will be absolutely huge. Maybe in the $3 billion dollar range. :awe:

It definitely won't surpass the first.

Special effects won't be a shocker, and altho the story has a lot of room for improvement (understatement of the year), a sequel will probably only be a minor upgrade at best.

Yech, why must everything successful have a sequel? Yeah it's pretty well guaranteed to make money today, but at some point people in general are going to get so tired of crappy cash-grab sequels that they'll stop going to any sequel. Well, maybe they won't, the average person isn't very smart and yet half the population is more stupid than they are, but I am pretty well at that point :\ :colbert:

Guarantee it won't surpass the first. Like jjsole said, special effects was what drew people in. Definitely wasn't the story, because on a basic level while enjoyable to watch while watching it, the story isn't something that's going to make me say "I want to watch that movie because it sucks me in" ... well, that deserves a qualifier due to the special effects, it won't be a movie that sucks me in without the superb 3D visuals. I will never watch Avatar in 2D. Never. It's fun to watch in 3D, the basic story gives a good ride while enjoying the whole package, but that's it. Now, ultimately Avatar is just going to serve as a vehicle for the technology. Many repeat purchases, and a ton of word of mouth. You'll have people who will want to watch Avatar 2 just to continue the same type of experience, but it won't be nearly as many because I am willing to bet half of the people who watched Avatar merely did so to judge all the 3D hype. A good percent came away impressed with the visuals, but will they want to watch a similar movie, story-wise, if the effects are available elsewhere? Personally, I don't care for anime, but I read the wiki page on Battle Angel when I discovered that Cameron will be tackling a live-action Battle Angel movie with the same 3D tech as Avatar. And well... that leaves me with a lot of anticipation. I am up in the air about Avatar 2, I won't go out of my way to see it but I won't actively avoid going to see it. I will, however, most definitely make the effort to catch Battle Angel in theaters. That 3D tech, with the concept of the story, just sounds crazy awesome.

Personally I'm surprised Avatar is going to have a sequel.

Well honestly, in terms of Hollywood, not at all. Who am I kidding? Cash cows are basically guaranteed sequels. If it wasn't for the obvious issue with Titanic, we should have seen a sequel. :D

I'm hoping though that Battle Angel gets more of Cameron's attention, and the Avatar sequels he just produces and lets other directors in on the fun. Or something... Battle Angel sounds like a far more entertaining and deeper story, but I do wonder if there is sequel possibility there. Personally it sounds like a movie concept begging for sequels, and I'd want them. Avatar, don't care one way or the other.

Will it do better probably not. Over 2 billion would be quite the feat to beat, though if the economy is doing a lot better just maybe as sequels do tend to do better.
But still very unlikely.
