Lets play with linux! Erm, where do I start?

Sorry, it's me again. Theres just so much I want to learn!

I'm a long time windows user. I've just installed Vista home premium on a partition on a new samsung 1tb hard drive. Whilst this is empty I'm toying with creating another partition and trying out linux for the first time. For fun.

I've never dual booted before [at least not on purpose anyway] and I've never lived with on installed any OS but windows.

So anything I need to do or take into account before I make the big leap? Any other options? Suggestions and reading material all welcome.
