lets play....why don't my front inputs work

rudeguy

I just picked up an Antec 300 case. I can't get the front headphone/mic inputs to work. I tried switching the plug from spdif to HD audio....checked the bios to make sure that it matched up...went into windows sound properties and it sees the front inputs.

Maybe its something weird with Windows 7?

I'm sorry, but there's no way I can't respond to this. "Let's play.... why don't my front inputs work".... that's what she said.

that's a barely passible 'that's what she said' at best.

OP, got the latest mobo drivers?

Is the audio wires a single block or a bunch of 2-pin plugs? Does your motherboard actually have HD Audio?

just a single plug and yeah...mobo is an Asus M2A-VM HDMI.

On the mobo's Ive seen the audio connector can be used for either AC97 or HD Audio. You set which option you want in the BIOS, and of course Windows will need the correct driver installed. But also important, THE PINOUT CHART IS DIFFERENT. So if you connect to front panel using the diagram for AC07 and then try to use it as an HD Audio port, it won't work. Maybe you already knew this, but maybe not.

...so if your front audio input is from a single plug you need to figure out which pinout it uses and make sure the suitable version is enabled in the BIOS.

yeah...there are 2 plugs. One for HD and one for AC97. I've tried both.

The problem I am running into is that I'm using Windows 7, so there aren't dedicated drivers for it yet. Anyone want to link me to the right drivers for an Asus M2A-VM HDMI to use with 7?

Win 7 has all the HD Audio drivers needed by my mobo's on board sound. Nothing needed to be added. It also has SPDIF and HDMI drivers built in. This screen clip shows the Win 7 Audio drivers for the HD Audio system:

Windows drivers work great for the rear output...I just can't get the front to work.

I tried the link above, but I can't get the download to go.

Meh, odds are you'll spend weeks figuring it out, only to find out that you get some weird noise through your headphones because the cables aren't shielded from all the EM emissions in your case. That's what happened to me. I just plug it in the back and reassign the port to something like line-in when I'm not using it.

The links worked for me. You might try them again. And make sure that you haven't disabled javascript.

No...that's a VERY passable "that's what she said" 🙂

Often Asus builds the MB in a way that if you use the back pickups it disables the front pickups.

I use a cheap set of headphones from Microsoft using Life Chat that are USB and plug into the Front USB. They were designed for Skype.

That makes sense.
