A thought struck me on those manufacturer's and constructor's that didn't do to well at all, or those that made an impact, then went away in F1 and Indy/CART.
We all know names like Williams, Lola, Ferrari, Mercedes, Ford, Reynard, Ilmor, etc. But I am trying to list those that might be forgotten or hard to remember. Help me by adding some in.
-list updated/fixed--
Indy/CART
engine:
Porsche
Alfa Romeo
Buick
Offenhauser
Novi

Chassis:
Galmer
Gurney - American Eagle - Rahal
March
Parnelli

F1
Chassis:
Sauber
Arrows
Tyrell
Ligiers

Engine:
I am drawing a blank here.

Also with F1, the ones you might see today are the spiritual successors of older engines and such. Was Renault derived from Benneton?

I thought this might interesting if the Garage crew can chime in with this.

I'm pretty sure that March was a chassis company, not an engine manufacturer.

And add Parnelli as a chassis manufacturer for Indy cars.

Two huge names missing from Indy engine manufacturers too:

Offenhauser
Novi

ZV

Here's a list of them:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C...e_engine_manufacturers

Around 6 of those are currently in F1.

many of those have never appeared in F1, ie Subaru, Lambo

Subaru was technically a badge job, like others on the list.

But Lamborghini was definitely in F1, in fact they were supposed to supply McLaren with a V12 in 1994 but went with Peugeot instead.

EDIT:

Lamborghini was an engine supplier in Formula One between the 1989 and 1993 Formula One seasons. It supplied engines to Larousse, Ligier, Lotus, Minardi and to a 'Lamborghini' team, although this last was not viewed as a works team by the car company. Late in 1991, a Lamborghini Formula One motor would be used in the Konrad KM-011 Group C sports car, but the car would only last a few races before the project was cancelled. The same engine, badged as a Chrysler by Lamborghini's then parent company, was tested by McLaren towards the end of the 1993 season, with a view to its use during the 1994 season. Although driver Ayrton Senna was reportedly impressed with the engine's performance, McLaren pulled out of negotiations, choosing a Peugeot engine instead, and Chrysler ended the project.

Buick in indy cars

Ford/Cosworth is well known even if they aren't involved in F1 anymore.

Buick is famous thanks to Roberto Guerrero spinning out on the pace lap.

And yes, I mixed up the list concerning March. thanks ZM.
